Could someone give me a general rundown on Weisenborns, such as: why the design, what is unique about sound etc. and what genre of player uses the guitar?

I saw David Lindley a few months ago playing solo. Weissenborns were the primary instrument he played (as well as saz, Irish bouzouki, and oud). He could get the Weissenborn to sound like a whole band, rhythm section included. His "Family Values" CD, which also features Ry and Joachim Cooder, is great and his Weissenborn is featured on lots of the songs. I remember when Weissenborns were considered a joke. Not anymore.

Thanks for the links Tod. Time to go buy some Ben Harper albums.
