I'm still beginning, but the bug has bit hard, along with the associated WAS. My goals are:

1. Finish my son's OM (down to final finishing, almost ready to set-up).

2. Build a stacked "tool tower" (from bottom up)- dish storage/Planer stand/go-bar deck.

3. Practice at least 30 minutes a day (I'd love to get to two hours, but it just doesn't seem realistic right now).

4. Build an OM for me (my first was a classical).

5. Learn basic inlaying skills.

6. BUY MORE WOOD...

To get back into the shop FULL TIME!
I am anxious but need to await a full-on physical early January. If I get good results, I want to try to start out a day a week and see if any deliterious effects befall me. If not, then increase slowly to full involvement.
On the "always optimistic" level, I did sign up for and get accepted for Healdsburg next August. So, I better get off my duff and finish what was left in limbo due to illness over a year ago. At least the lacquer should be well cured by now!

to keep the whole thing a hobby i should probably stay away from 'goals,' but don't mind saying that i hope to (in this order):
1. settle on a new finishing material and regimine (i'm in the process of testing on a piece of wenge right now) - at least settle for the time being.
2. finish a few new jigs and forms, including try out the heating blanket i got from john hall.
3. build an OM
4. build a new 'auditorium-ish' shape that i drew a month ago.

two other hopes along the way are to slow down just a bit to ensure greater accuracy at each step, and at the same time, try to be a bit more experimental. i've now built 5 OM's, more or less following the same formula. i think that with the new shape it may be time to start spreading my wings a bit - maybe a sound port, maybe some adjustments to the bracing, maybe an A frame underneath the fingerboard extension. might not all happen at once. but now that i know i can make a good sounding guitar, it's time to start chasing after the sound i hear in my head with a bit more intention.
neat thread. thanks hesh.

Carlton buddy, you do not need to complete your first build to have my outmost respect (was about to say "sir" but i prefer"my very good friend"), you always share what you know with great generosity so what i will say here probably will reflect what most of us would wish to say to you, that we're all here for you wheter it'd be encouragement to resume that build or to just get up and turn on the light in your shop so that you go for it with all of us behind you.

Now bro, what we'd like in the coming days, as a mean to motivate you, would be for you to get some pics of what's done so we can encourage you on what's left to achieve that great goal, Carlton, your guitar will be finished in 2007 ory nickname ain't " The Bear "!!!!

Happy New Year brother Carlton!

Serge

Hmm, I think I might build me another jig or two in 2007

Just built 2 x Williams Jigs (traded one to cover cost) made 1 and a 1/2 kerfing jigs (needed to redo some of the first one I made so that I could take photos for the tute ) Made a neck scarf jig (cool). Made a male and female solid bending form. Made a 25' and a 15' radius dish. Made a gobar deck, the bottom of which is a 600mm drop-leaf that swings out to meet level with the main bench and line up under the top which suspends from the ceiling with built in down light, 6 point individually switched power supply, clamp storage a neck massaging function, drink holder and twin overhead foxtails. Done an SJ mold and an adjustable guitar holder for the binding jig and all kinds of helpful little thingie-ma-bobs and what-knots.

Now with all these jigs in my workshop I got no room left to go making any silly guitars. Just remember you bunch of string pick'in tool pushers, you CAN dance a merry jig, but ya can't dance noth'in with no stink'in gitfiddle........

Well OK, maybe a good goal for me is to build just one little guitar this year...but thats only a maybe! I'm not the least bit happy about needing cut up any of that lovely zoot I got stashed away in my lair. I'm gonna need to sort of ease myself into the idea.... .............

For cry'in out loud!!! You guys are all freaks! It's like ask'in a man to part with one of his children! I just can't choose!!!

1- Complete my paint booth so I can finally settle on a finish material and schedule that I like!

2- Finish no.3 (EIR florentine cutaway)

3- Start and possibly finish no.4, a Baritone.

4- Buy my thickness sander and my bandsaw...

5- Play more guitar!

6- Finally get my golf handicap down to double digits!!!

I am retiring April 1 2007 so i will have more time to devote to my passion.

I plan to finally build the various jigs and fixtures I have been putting off
.
Build a few guitars and see if I can consistantly reproduce the sound of my last build. It's a killer.

With that done I feel that I will be ready to offer my wares for sale.

Cecil

Well, the problem is, I don't have a digital camera and I doubt I'll be able to buy one anytime soon.

I haven't gotten as far as working wood into a guitar yet. Right now, I'm building a fence for a router table that I made for my laminate trimmer. I've completed templates for the body, headstock and bridge (had to design the bridge first...tried to redesign the headstock, but it was taking too much time, so I'm going with one I came up with a couple of years ago). I still need to make a sanding/gluing form and solidify my bracing design. I figure I've got a three-month window of opportunity for gluing before the humidity shoots up again. That's a lot of time for many people, but I work much too s...l...o...w...l...y.

That's where things stand right now. Thanks again for your motivational boost, Serge!

My goal is to build 1 guitar in 2007 - as clean and as detailed as Hesh, Lance and some of the others I have come to admire on OLF

My other goal is to gift a couple of my guitars to someone who could not otherwise afford a decent guitar. Going to start looking at the high school level over the next 30 days. Following the examples of generosity I have seen on OLF.

Goals:

1) get arm working again so I can play guitar and build some, too.
2) Get that dang baritone (acoustic #2) bound, finished, and set up. I've been putting it off for over a year now, which is just pathetic.
3) Finish (as in, spray a finish on) the two electrics I've got in limbo
4) Build 2 acoustics and 2 electrics. I realize this is absurdly optimistic, but I'll dang well try.

Great thread,

1. Get someone to build me a Williams Binding Jig
2. Do my shop expansion that adds a recording booth
3. Buy a Thickness sander
4. Install better dust control & air cleaners
4. Get molds for J-200, L1-LO, OLF SJ
5. Buy a Heat Blanket
6. Complete 3 batches of 4 guitars each for 2007
7. Become better at finishing

Mike

Hesh, I share one of your goals, albeit probably many years in the future. My dream is to build a guitar for my Uncle Art, the man who first put a guitar in my lap when I was 4 years old. Should you ever be accepting nominations for that deserving individual whom you'd like to present with an instrument, he is the most deserving individual I know. I still have 2 of his instruments, and given the choice of only having one guitar over any in the world it would be his 1985 D-28-- (and I'd sneak the E-2 Lance made for me in the trunk of the car before they could catch me ). Of course, you've most likely picked that individual already, and although I suggest it in jest, my Uncle cares deeply for these instruments and has forgotten more than I'll ever know about them.

No problem Carlton, i can understand that part but we'll mange some other way, right? Thinking text here!

Ok buddy, most important things are first, i think i would glue up what can be glued if you have that opportunity coming up, you could always route your dishes while your glue is drying up. I understand the part about being slow, are you a bit perfectionist like me my friend? Just rubbin' ya good buddy but one thing for sure, i definitely wanna hear that you've made some major advancements on that awesome build to be so that you my great friend can also taste what it feels like to put your strings on your very first instrument and if God allows it, dagnabit, it will be in 2007! i'll even bug ya on yo PM Box all right?

I'm workin' on it! An occasional boot aimed at my posterior might help, but don't wear the steel toed ones, o.k.?
