Holy schmolly, that is out of the twilight zone!

    OK Nelson! Were both machinist types, you quote on producing that bad boy! I think it's buy 2 guitars time! Unless, of course, one wanted to play fretless and fretted in the same song!

    I don't see any means of retraction and retention of the frets to the down postion. I see more use in a guitar that's also a pizza stretcher!

Bought a box of those at Wall Mart, the lady at the cash said Holy Cow, didn't know we were sellin' them by the box!

There was a bass at the 12th fret (Toronto) a few months back ... pretty cool.

   this proves a very good point. NOT ALL IDEAS ARE GOOD IDEAS . I think someone did do alot of thinking but I can only imagine the amount of work to make it play .

I've seen the designs on mikeyguitar.com (have it bookmarked even!) I'm
still trying to figure out how the frets lay completely flat. There's a good
close-up of one of the bass fretboards.

On a similar note, there's also the Fretgroove (http://www.fretgroove.com)
system. I'd love to get my mitts on one of those to try out. There's a
video of Bill Clements (one-armed rockin' bassist) playing on one of those at
http://youtube.com/watch?v=D3h7fH592u8 that's worth checking out.
Pretty neat.

That video on Youtube is pretty cool. Since most of my building experience is building basses I really wonder how they make the bass work. From my experience the set up on a fretless is really touchy to get the "growl" sounding right. It almost seems like the nut would need to drop with the frets so the set up was close. Or course if the nut dropped then the bass would not be in tune. Kind of an interesting idea but maybe just too complicated to pull off. With that being said...I would enjoy seeing one in person.
