So David Beckham, the EX-England football captain is leaving Real Madrid to play for LA Galaxy in the US soccer leagues. And, guess how much LA Galaxy are paying him? A five year contract at $1,000,000 a week! $250,000,000 in total, for kicking a football!

Well actually they are getting a whole lot more than that. Worldwide David Beckham is the biggest marketing product there is. In the US Tiger Woods might rule, but in the rest of the world David Beckham makes Tiger look like very, very small, knowhere near David's league. David is probably the most recognised face there is.

But $250,000,000 for an over-the-hill footballer! Now I know a lute and guitar builder who does deserve that much.

The best part, from my point of view, is that his attrocious wife Victoria (former member of the Spice Girls for those that don't know) is off to LA rather than coming back to England! She is our revenge for the Boston Tea Party!

LA is inhabited by strange folk so David and his wife will fit right in.

I am a rabid soccer fan and applaud the infusion of a big name player into the MLS if for no other reason that to help give it credability. Big money legitimizes things over here (sadly) and soccer has struggled here for legitimacy

I think the Beckhams would fit in better in Silicon Valley.
(if you know what I mean)

I hear that... at least in the U.S., there seems to be a national obsession with being entertained constantly. That, and we're becoming so sex-crazed here that virtually every other commercial is for Enzyte or Viagra, or some kind of "personal lubricant" etc. What's up with that?
Thank goodness for dvr's and vcr's so we can skip the commercials...

All that money would be better spent educating our children and ourselves for that matter. If our society spent the same money every year on our educational system that we do on entertainment, nobody would ever have to pay for college. Think about it!

I refuse to pay for a ticket to a professional sports game of any kind, except for minor league baseball. For me, the Pawtucket Red Sox will only cost me $7 a seat, and that's a cheap evening out. I'm just not going to help pay someone else's multi-million dollar salary. It's folly.
