A buddy of mine recently picked up a 1961 or '62 O-16NY for dirt cheap.
I got to play on it, and it's one of the best sounding guitars I've ever
heard. Anyway my friend, who happens to be a great repair guy, got it
with nylon strings on it. He however insists it was meant to be a steel
string, and has equiped it accordingly (and that's how I played it). I've
looked into it since and there are others who insist it was indeed
supposed to be a nylon-string guitar. What do y'all know about this?

Also, if anyone knows where I can buy some plans for a single O, I'd much
appreciate it. Lance, I just peeped your O-12 beauty, perhaps you can
help me?

I had a 0-16 New Yorker back in the '60s and I kick myself everytime I think about how I let it go!
But, I did take the profile off of it and have used it for my Parlor model ever since.
It makes one fantastic instrument.
On the original, I fitted it with light gauge strings and it never had any ill effects.

I just finished a 0-16NY clone built from a kit supplied by John Hall at Blues Creek Guitars, one of the OLF sponsors. John can provide tracings and a mold.

This was my first and while I'm pretty much a piker when it somes to playing, my wife is quite talented and dhe is in love with this guitar. I've strung it with lights.

What I seem to remember about New Yorker was that they were designed for either nylon or silk n steel style strings. I believe that silk n steel strings had silk core on the 6th,5th,4th, 3rd but the B ane #1E were steel

build. I've go a couple nice sets of mahogany waiting to be used. Any
recommendations as far as tops?

can trace my friend's (not my friends - this is why correct punctuation is
crucial ) and get all the specs from that.

Yes, it's the Shasta model. Think about a cedar or redwood top. I've used redwood on 90% of my Shasta models, mostly with walnut bodies, and it work's great. A mahogany/cedar would be a SWEET instrument.
