On the workbench, January 17, 2006 two five string fretted bass necks. Click pic to enlarge. These necks are made of Macassar ebony fretboards, German hornbeam, Purpleheart, and North American Maple with birdseye
figure. The four attaching inserts are brass thread and the tuners will be Grover Titans. The truss rod is two way adjustable at the heel of the neck. The neck is stabilized with two 1/8 by 3/8 inch carbon fiber slats epoxied into position.

Now, what's on your bench.

On the bench in my shop are two Martin Jumbo shaped Cocobolo bodies in parts & pieces. I don't usually make copies, but I was so impressed with the two Martin Jumbos I've played, that I just had to try it out.
The two Coco sets are consecutive cuts from the same billet & I am trying to build both as identical as possible. One guit will have a fine grained Lutz top from friend Shane & the other has a really nice Engelmann top from Ed Dicks.
I'm hoping to be able to draw *some* conclusions about the differences between the two varieties of Spruce.
Also, there's a small bodied Koa & Engelmann commissioned by a friend in New Mexico.

1/17/06 -
Finished up '68 Tele refret, nut and pickup rewind project.
Reglued cheap acoustic headstock.
Setup / new bridge on 20's Gibson banjo 5-string conversion neck.
Lyon & Healy mandola brace reglue
Lyon & Healy mandolin fret dress.
Yamaha 12 string bridge reglue.
Harmony uke restring and setup.
Tried to replace the speaker on my bench test amp, only to find the
replacement I put in was frazzled as well.

Tomorrow I have to finish the bridge reglue and headstock reglue
projects. Finish installing MXR Dynacomp inside a Danelectro 12 string.
Make replacement pickguard for a Peavey bass.
Reglue a brace and cracked top on a sat-upon Washburn mandolin.
Take in a few more instruments and appointments.
Try to find yet another replacement speaker for my bench amp.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the 0-16 by fine tuning the action and touching up the finish. I have an order in to John Hall for a much less serviced 00 style Martin kit in EIR and Lutz -- should be here in a few weeks.

Bruce...Is that a Wal bass? What is the reason for the neck replacement?

Just putting the finishing touches on a flamed maple/engelmann top archtop. Why do I always forget to make the truss rod cover or leave it till the guitar is done

Next up is a quilted maple archtop with engelmann top...hopefully I can post some pics.....oh well...it was worth a try.

How were you other fellows able to post pictures?

I posted my pics just like I always do but I have my own server space and do not upload to the OLF space. Maybe that's the problem. Perhaps OLF has run out of picture space. I really don't know so I'm just babbling here, actually I'm just trying to become brazilian like Serge!!!

What's on my bench? Everything in my shop that's not nailed down - I
seriously need to clean things up!

If you're asking what we're working on, I've got a mahogany a-style
mandolin. Working on bending the rib out of far-too-thick sapele over a
hot pipe.

Brad, yep, it's a Wal. Nothing wrong with the neck except it has no frets. I built a fretted neck for this guitar to save the original from getting cut up.

It's a fretted conversion, with the ability to swap the original back on for resale value. The second blank was brought along, just in case I botched the first blank.

With any luck I'm going to have my first Five String Fretted Bass soon as well as fix my friend up with the same.

I'll say this, it's worth twice what I charged my friend. (maybe three times as much) yeah, 3x easy

Been cold here and still recovering from the surgeries in Nov, plus took a fall
yesterday and clunked my head and hip, but felt better today and got the
shop up to 50 deg! So, put in some time on the bamboo inlay for the koa
terz saga.

Dug out some ply for forms for a 000 koa commission. Waiting for an Antes
drawing before I cut out forms, and itchin' for the Watkins neck and pyramid
bridges to appear!

Three hours!! Woohoo! More than I've spent out there in the last two
months. Not much, but I made some MOP dust today!

Thicknessed EI rosewood back & sides for a OOO & 2 O sized tenors. Did final set up on a paduk/mahogany electric bouzouki & packed it for shipping. Started assembly on a lacewood reso-zouk & a teardrop shaped electric bouzouki. Also under way are 1 EI rosewood/WR cedar octave mandolin, 2 mahogany/sitka bouzoukis, 1 figured walnut octave mandolin & a walnut resozouk.

Worked on tearing out a wall in the on-going shop remodel.

literally on the bench? My aunt's coffe table, which needs fixing due to absolutely shoddy workmanship to begin with (pesky 'crafts movement').

Other than that, the tools I moved off the temporary storage shelf when I loaded it up with small bits of very flamey bubinga and cedrella solidbody blanks :-)

(more figuratively: an acoustic baritone, a strat and a tele. All quasi-finished, requiring binding, finishing, assembly and setup..)

A cittern neck now replete with a carved heel, and 1/8 X 3/8 carbon rods. Flipping heck, it's slow progress, but I am taking my time with this one. I have to, 'cos I don't have time.

Discovered epoxy for the first time. Great stuff, innit?
