FYI

Last year I attended a guitar show at the montreal jazz festival that I enjoyed
very much. the show featured hundreds of the worlds best guitars and was a
great opportunity to talk to builders and try / buy instruments. anyway, the
show is happening again in summer 2007. If you want info you can check
out http://montrealguitarshow.com/accueil_en.aspx
As far as i know it's free and open to the public. The montreal jazz festival is
the biggest in the world and is very well attended by music lovers from all
over the world. It was fun to listen to great artists, attend workshops, and
play some beautiful instruments...

Thanks for the link, stringman. I only recently heard about this show and am glad to get more info on it. I'm going to make every effort to get up to Montreal for this.

We will have several guitars there. Room & flight is booked.

We were selected at the last show to build a guitar for the "Rotating Scholarship [SteCat] Project". There is a link on thier site with progress pictures of the build if you are interested.
Guitar build

The guitar will be lent to a Montreal student musician for a one year term and then will be returned the following year to be displayed at the Jazz Festival then lent to another student for the next year and so on. I feel very honored to be selected to be in the first initial group of 4 luthiers for this exciting project.

Hi Tim, Great looking expose on the site linked above in your post. I especially liked this one pic that shows how you get those waist bindings to behave like a gentleman....

Have a wonderful show in Montreal, Bruce

I'll be there with bells on. I've got to re-stock my candy dish to keep Tim's wife Mary in the sweets.
Anyone in the area, please stop by and introduce yourselves if you make it to the show.

Well, we'll see all of you there. This is the show's second year and i
understand that many great luthiers and guitar enthusiasts graciously
offered constructive advice on how to make montreal a world-class guitar
fair. Thanks go to Mario Beauregard, Bill Comins, Rick Davis, Sergei de
Jonge, Charles Fox, Oskar Graf, Michael Greenfield, Peter Hopkins, Michael
Lewis, John Monteleone, Tom Ribbecke et Jeff Traugott. Look forward to
seeing all the fine guitars this summer!

Would those of you who've been to this show before be willing to tell us some more about it? I have a few specific questions:

Exhibit halls are noisy places where you can get a good _look_ at the instruments, but can't _hear_ them well. Are there quiet listening rooms where guitars can be taken and played? - Or some other forum for hearing the guitars in a listening-conducive environment?

Are there workshops specifically aimed at luthiers and lutherie students?

Are there vendors of woods and supplies?

This is probably a foolish question, but as a father of two young children, I always have to figure out to what extent, if any, I might be able to include my family in these sorts of events... is there any attempt made to accomodate young children, i.e. to provide activites or anything that makes it fun for them?

Thanks!

Todd,
Send me an email   tim [at] mcknightguitars [dot] com and I will give yo an email address of someone more qualified to answer your questions.

They have changed locations of the guitar show this year from the "mall" to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. They did have quiet rooms and booths set up last year so I imagine they will have the same available this year.

As for activities for children, there are a LOT of music events around the vicinity. The city streets are shut down for several blocks for a few weeks during the Montreal Jazz Festival so there are lots of activities. The river is only a short walk and it has vendors and activities there. The event has many indoor and outdoor stages with music constantly in progress.

Unless your children are extremely well behaved having them around multi-thousand dollar guitars might require some serious thought

That's good to hear. I felt bad for the guys displaying their wares upstairs amongst the percussion, subway traffic, et.al.

I don't know how Newport was run, but I think there needs to be some etiquette regarding the rooms. If someone's in there playing with the door closed. Wait. Don't come barging in chatting with one of your friends while proceeding to thrash on an instrument.

Distractions don't help sales... Yeah, I got a bee in my bonnet.
