I think Gurian makes some that are longer.

Todd,

I have bwb purfs for weiss but not rope. I can get some with my next order if you like but it would be 6-8 weeks before I would see them.

Good luck

Shane

That's geat Todd about the wood arriving! On the prufs, I will just add that as another item with my next order. You will have no minimums to pay as I want a few other interesting items anyway that will ramp up to the usual few hundred $$ I seem to be spending on this stuff every few weeks. I am getting lots of options in the purf and bindings now though!

Hey, I am extatic that you will make use of that 'extra' top. I have a pile or should I say PILE that I keep for myself as well for future smaller instruments.....but I am running out of room!

Do you have some pics of the rope purfling and is it
large enough to actually use as bindings on a
Weiss?

I've been looking for rope binding also for my Weissenborn. I had LMI send me a pc. of what they called rope binding to see it. Way to small in my eyes. I'd like to buy some and had resolved myself to making it, cause it couldn't be found. If you have it, Shane, Please post a picture of it like Mike said.

Thanks
Dave

I'd be interested in seeing a pic also. I have a mahogany Weissenborn set and am in planning stage trying to decide what to bind it with. I was thinking about simple curly maple because it's available to me, but a rope binding or purfling would be great.

I don't have weiss length rope purfs in stock but I will have them custom made, I will order them probably tomorrow when I get togehter the other stuff I need. Anyway, they are .080 x .11 and I will have them 45 inches long. You can see a picture of what they will look like by going to the here and scrolling done to the purfling section. The rope is in the middle of the samples.

Thanks Shane, but I want the rope binding bigger(traditional).
Kent, where did you get your Mahogany Weiss. set from. I never did find any big enough. Ended up buying Koa. That was all I could find in that length! I still want a set of Mahogany as it's cheaper price wise than Koa. Volcano Guitar Works has nice stuff(Koa). Love my Koa set from them.

I got my Mahogany set from Larry at galleryhardwoods.com. It's a very nice set and the price was very good, though I don't remember exactly what I paid now. It was such a nice set I ordered a second set for doing a 000 12 fret in the future, cause I'm such a sucker for Mahogany.  They don't show the sets on the website, but you can go to the contact page and request a quote and he will respond with into.

Dave,

Do you have a picture of what that binding looks like? I can have it made if I know what I am looking for. And I then I will get some, even if it is too far down the road for you on this build, at least it will be ready for the next time!

Shane,

I think they mean like this on a Michael Dunn Weiss:

Great! I will look into those, something like a maple/walnut rope.

Thanks Dave

Yep, that's the stuff. It needs to have a thin, dark line
on the inside to keep it together during bending and
application. Bear Creek guitar is another good place
to see examples. Whatever they use is darker than
walnut, probably dyed Holly or Maple.

Lemme see if I can get a link going here

Ron Steiger (Allspruce) who made an all spruce guitar for Bob C is making a harp guitar and posting pics on the Harp Guitar Forum. He shows there how he makes rope binding. Check it out Rope Binding. Scroll to near the bottom where he starts and then on to the next page, Very cool!!

Yea Dave!!
Exactly like that!!! Hit the nail on the head. I did see those pics on making the rope binding for the harp guitar a few weeks ago. It looks like the luthier that's doing it sanded the backing right off. How did he hold it together?
Shane, let me know if you can do that binding. I've ordered some tortoise binding just to be different but I'll put that on another project.

Thanks
Dave
