Mike O'Melia wanted to participate in the OLF #2 Guitar Project as many of you others have. Just wanted to thank him publicly for getting involved, please join me in that.

He purchased a two-way truss rod for the neck under construction at CNCguitarparts.com by John Watkins.

Then if that weren't enough, he answered the Californian Call from Hank for an ebony bridge blank so he could create one of his, as he calls it, "SMILEY-Face Bridges".

Thanks Mike. I would like to know more about you. Why don't you, and anyone else that hasn't, send a picture and brief Luthier's Bio over for Lance to post. In the mean time why don't you do that in this thread? I can host a picture on my website if that feature isn't working yet. bdickeyjbd@yahoo.com

The OLF Number Two was a dream in someone's mind. Even while the dream has changed slightly, the purpose has not: do something nice for someone else. I think when this dream is realized that we can all be proud as OLFer's it became a reality. Hat's off to all ya'll, but especially to our new friend, slackkeymike!

I have one question: What is slack key?

Im pretty sure slack key refers to Hawaiian steel guitar tunings - which are refered to by that name,
played on lapsteel or weissenborn usually.
As for slackkeymikes contribution - bravo - good stuff and much appreciated Im sure.
Cheers

Thanks Charlie, Hawaiin. Well, those weissborn YouTube's we've had posted lately are really neat.

Yep, hat's off and aloha to Mike O'Melia!

Practice breeds confidence and confidence breeds competence---- Konacat, Philip

I like your saying Serge. Is that by the famous Kona Cat? He has a way with words. Let's see, if I change a few words it's a new saying right?

Practice breeds competence. Competence breeds Confidence. Confidence breeds a price increase.

i think i might switch and use yours once i'm confident of what i'll sell one day!

Yup , Philip, our poker player extraordinaire wrote this great saying in one of his posts which sounded really good to my ears! I borrowed without his permission at the time but he was kind enough to let me use it still!

Glad to help!

Yes, Slack Key is a form of Hawaiian folk music (not to be confused with Don Ho stuff!!) Actually, should you want to hear some, go to Taropatch.net.

I love slack key guitar music. You don't hear much about it though. Ledward Kaanapala is a favorite.

Maybe Hank can set this baby up with a high nut and some slick strings so Mike can try it out? I would like to hear some of this type of music. (probably did years ago on TV watching those hula girls in Hawaii)

I'm amazed at the different types of music. Jimmie, hope you make it to Old Man's shindig. If I could get my brother in law to come he could flat entertain us for a bit.

I love slack key too! I have alot of slack key compilations, contemporary Hawaii'an stuff like Iz, and the old torch song fav's too!
I love that stuff, Don Ho is actually pretty cool to listen too, IMO.
Anyhoo I think this music is something that will stick with anyone who spends any time in Hawaii, the music just takes you back to the Aloha spirit you feel when your there, as soon as you hear the first notes.
Cheers

Bruce, the way it stands right now, I'm planning on being there. Look forward to seeing all of you again and any newcomers who come. If you want to hear some samples of slack key guitar, go to "Dancing Cat Records" and listen to some samples.

You guys DO know your slack key. Dancing Cat is THE label these days for slack key. Led, Ray Kane (my hero) and on and on. Not sure I would put Bro Iz in this area...but his guitar players did use some of the techniques...Bro Iz was in a class by himself. Someday I want to try to build a Martin Tenor Uke or a Kamaka.

Slack key does not require a high nut (at least I have never heard that before). Most of the popular tunings can be played on quality factory guitars (Taylor, Martin). But I do understand why that might be a consideration in a custom guitar.

Yes...I want to record one song on it for you!

Mike
