I am a first time builder, and getting close to “closing the box” on my classical with Ovangkol back, maple sides, walnut neck, and cedar top
I have the top braced and ready to fit, but find that the waist has “splayed” out approx. 1/4 inch or so.
Is this unusual?
I am building from scratch, using Sloane, Doubtfire, Cumpiano and Overholtzer books for guidance.
None of the books mention this problem.
Shall I build some sort of “keeper” to hold the sides in place during the gluing operation?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

all of these authors in their construction method, at least the ones i have read which doesn't include overholtzer, require the use of a sort of form to keep the sides in shape till the box is closed. did you use one of their recommended forms?crazymanmichael39106.9608680556

Been there done that. Just build yourself something to hold it all in place. Then plan for number two by building a mold or adjustable building board.

No big deal. Just be glad you caught it now, that is before the glue up.

If the sides are still 'square' to the top, then you can just arrange some temporary supports (a couple of blocks clamped or attached with a dab of glue to your work board) to push the waist in a bit.
If the sides are splayed out at an angle- ie the waist has developed a 'twist', you should make sure you check the profile of the sides where they meet the top, so that your top will still be flat (or at the appropriate radius) where it joins the sides.
An outside mold does make this all easier, though it's not traditional.

An invalid character was specified in the Path parameter for the MapPath method.

inch thick MDF, and a brush shaft. draw the shape it SHOULD be on the MDF. drill holes & put in 6" lengths of brush shaft to act as supports. cut it out on the bandsaw to allow room to get the clamps in. glue on the the back, then flip it all over to glue the top.

I guess youcould glue top & back both on at the same time, but I prefer to do one at a time
