Brock / Lance,
Are there any plans to restore the deleted forums?

CNC Lutherie
Guitar Project OLF #1
Guitar Project OLF #2

For those who may not know, these forums disappeared today. Brock said he may have unintentionally hit the wrong button. The question in my mind is, "Can they be restored."

Thanks, Bruce

Nothing was deleted (we almost NEVER delete anything). All conversations are in the archive.

I didn't hit the wrong button as much as not realize how many threads were hanging out there that had not had any posts for more than a week.

Once a thread lays dormant for a week I usually sweep it to the archive.

There are no messages posted in this forum in the last year....

This is the message displayed now in OLF #2.

These forums have always had every conversation from the past year. They are no longer there. It just made sense to be able to access the info in those forums from those forums.

I'll go look in the archive now and see if I can find them elsewhere. bd

yeah... there is no easy way to undo that. Again, everything is still there though, it is just in the archive.

Bummer, Do I have your permission to host this offsite? You'd have to know what to search for, before you could even find anything in there.

Let me ask you this, Why don't you zero out all the forums like this? Then there would be nothing showing at all on the forum when folks came until someone posted something new.

This needs to be reversed if at all possible. I'm glad we weren't being attacked again, but the result is similar.

Bruce, If "all the forums" went weeks with no action, they would be archived.
Futhermore, archiving posts is not quite the same as being attacked, none what so ever.
Bummer, Do I have your permission to host this offsite?
I would prefer you didn't. Afterall this is an OLF community activity, so in my mind it needs to remain part of the olf.
Let me ask you this, Why don't you zero out all the forums like this?
I didn't zero anything out. I told the system to archive all threads that had not seen any new posts for a week.

Again, I didn't realize there would be so much.

... but the larger thing you should consider is WHY do I do this? We are marching toward 1300 members now, and at any one time we may have as many as 60 people on the board. As a result this puts enormous strain on the database (especiallly considering we have hung on to the cascading threads from the early days). Sweeping the old messages to the archive is one way to try to make the system respond (at least) a little faster.
This needs to be reversed if at all possible.
I told you before, I can't reverse this. If you find a thread in the archive I can move it back to an active topic, but going through and "undoing" the archival of old messages is not possible.

Besides. How hard is it to search the archive thread? It is no big deal.
I'm glad we weren't being attacked again, but the result is similar.
I hardly think so.

Thank you Walter, that was helpful.

The Guitar Projects are long and ongoing, this totally defeats the purpose of having those forums as separate entities from the main forum.

Built into the software is a mechanism for users to look at recent posts only or from one year ago. I'm scratching my head on this one. The OLF is not the same. Maybe that's okay.

For me it's like trying to drive two vehicles, only with a blindfold on. These projects won't finish themselves, this seems to undermine the process. Whine over.

Not that it matters, but I thought Bruce had a legitimate complaint. No need to get huffy.

Thanks Brock. Like I said the OLF has changed, I can feel the love.

Thanks Ron. It is legitimate but no one in management is listening. I just want to get these two guitars done. These two guitars and the effort of all involved deserve a place in the sun.

I wonder how Ameritage, Cedar Creek and George feel now that their gifts toward these worthy projects are OFF the BOARD. Not to mention all the guys who sent money and spent valuable time working on these projects.

Bruce...with all due respect, if you truly believe these projects are in jeopardy, I'd be willing to take over the OLF #1 to get it over the very few remaining hurdles. I'm sure we can get someone to handle #2 as well. Quite frankly, I don't see the big deal here.

And as far as the state of the forum, I believe that aside from the temporary hiccup on posting pics, the OLF keeps getting better.

Hats off to Brock & Lance!

Guys we need to remember how much time and effort goes into putting an excellent site like this together. Lance and Brock have done a great job keeping this a friendly and informative community. Give them a break!!

Lance and Brock not only have put this forum together for their own benefit but also for ours. I was a network engineer and I know that sometimes things like this happen, I also know that Brock didn't mean things to turn out this way and he must really feel terrible.

Instead of getting upset let's just all be appreciative of what they have given us.

Better to let the dust come down folks, for the sake of our community. We have something rare here, let's push together in the same direction please.

Couldn't you just go to the archives and cut and paste whatever info you wanted to keep right into a new thread in the OLF1 and OLF2 forums?

Seems like that ought to work....

My thoughts exactly, Dave. Looks like Terry has re-set the OLF #1 Forum. I also checked the archives and it looks like everything needed is there.

Can we end the drama now and get back to the important things...LIKE THE BEARS WINNING THE SUPER BOWL TOMORROW!!!

GO BEARS

So cut the boys some slack. I find that requests with praise go far!
That's an excellent point, Flippo. But in addition, I've learned a few things from this thread that I think we all should keep in mind:

1) If we have an issue or suggestion on a particular forum problem, contact Lance & Brock privately first instead of airing it out in a public thread. If the answer doesn't meet with our expectations then we just have to accept it and move on. They're the owners.

2) Now that we know that a thread will be archived after a week of inactivity, either keep it alive by posting or start a new thread and refer any questions to the archived thread.

3) With the increased number of members we are experiencing some growth pains and I would hope that we can exercise some patience and understanding while the admin. activities can address the related issues. IMO, the OLF is still the best forum out there.

"That's my opinion...I could be wrong"...Dennis Miller said that.

Seems like this is realy all about one members "wants and needs". Sort of the way of most of America goes these days...One big mouth changing life for all the rest who lay dormant/silent. Not looking at what's best for the whole community only about what one's needs/wants. That's ashame.

If Bruce was/is so worried about theses projects, why didn't he make sure they were finished in a timely fashion? How long have these been  going on now...two or three years! WOW! Wonder what the sponsors/contributors think about that! (never mind those who were expecting to recieve these gifts).

Wiseman...That's an unfair statement you made for a first post or a 10,000th post. The length of time on these projects is in no way Bruce's fault. It was Bruce who so kindly picked up the ball and took the responsibility to organize many of the efforts. That was not the point of the thread nor in anyone's response.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

Sorry you disagree. But I don't see it that way. We don't judge a man (or woman) by their works. I am not knocking Bruce. I am knocking the fact the because one big mouth opens it, we all are subject to what comes out...perhaps to a much greater degree than what was intended by our forefathers "freedom of speech". In this case we have one member "demanding" that the owner of the forum undue something that he (the owner)saw fit ... for whatever reason. It's brock's and lance's sand box. we are just invited to play.

I don't see this as something relative to how many posts i have or have not made. Whether my first , 10000th, or my last post, that has no bearing on the message.

just because someone starts something ( like one of these projects) does not give him/her special rights either. Like I said if his concern is getting the project done ( and therfore the benefit of completion to the benfactor) then let him get to it. Take it over and finish it. You don't "need a Village" (as we have been told) to finish a guitar.

I wonder if you would have the same opinion if I were white. I don't see any posts here from those of other cultures/ethnicities.
