sigh...

you know... this is an unfortunate situation.

Recently there has been a rash of "incidents" on the forum, and while I don't generally believe in "a few bad apples spoil the barrel" I do think we need to eliminate the need to edit or delete posts.

My preference would be that you would have a few minutes (30 perhaps) to edit your posts for spelling, grammer, etc. but our software won't allow that. It is an all or none thing.

We have had 3 situations where members have went back and deleted massive amounts of their posts, radically altered them. Sometimes to remove all traces of themselves and other times because (we believe) they were trying to scrub off disparaging remarks.

Certainly if you say something and come to your senses and want to change it later that is admirable... I have done it too. But when we get contacted by the person who has felt insulted and asked where those messages have gone it puts us in a sticky spot.

While we have always maintained that everyone has to stand behind their statements and neither Lance nor I endorse anything said on this board (apart from our own comments) we do feel that maintaining a semi permenant record is a good thing.

So with reluctance we have removed the edit and delete buttons.

We will try to find a better solution for this with our next software installation, but for now this is the best we can come up with.

sorry... I am not thrilled with it either.

Thanks for the explanation Brock!

I understand completely. I'll just have to get better at proofreading and spelling before I hit post!

This is not necessarily a bad idea. This may actually force people to think hard before they take a cheap shot at people.

Not taken away.. That is just broken.

It is on the plate to get fixed, but we don't immediately see what the problem is. We have people looking at it.

I guess I will have to be more careful about which of the voices in me ed does the posting.

Honestly I sometimes have severe concentration problems and have a hard time communicating effectively. There have been a couple of post that I wished to take back but thankfully you guy are an understanding lot. I'm human and make mistakes, I feel to get called on them is an opportunity to learn from them.

I just wish I wasn't so goofy I'm in my 40's fer cryin out loud.

This could be a good thing as hopefully it'll bring more discipline to some posts.

Here's a suggestion .... When I am trying to describe something complex or formulate a tricky question I write it out in WORD. Proof read it for -- content, spelling, grammer good taste what have you -- then cut and paste the message into a post.

It also gives you the chance to rephrase something that could be taken as an unintentional slight to a particular person or the group at large On days where I forget to take my Tourette's Syndrome meds, it has prevented me from jealously saying things like "____ your guitars really suck"

It certainly raises accountability thats for sure! I have made posts to which afterwards I read something within that I could see would be taken the wrong way and changed it, sometimes there would be 5 re:'s before my post, LOL.
I do however sense a fed-up'ed ness, in the mods and admins tone these days and I certainly hope that we arent annoying them too terribly...
I havent read any posts recently that I considered to be distasteful, although I haven a different sensibility about these things that do the moderating team sometimes.
Or perhaps they were changed. But I really find the OLF to be one of the most civil places on the net.
If we are unable to change posts after they are initially made...
mabye a good rule of thumb from now on would be to assume that whoever posted,
meant the best possible interpretation of thier words until it is otherwise demonstrated.
Cheers

It isn't that so much as it is that we are being more frequently "drawn into" situations that we would just prefer to be left out of. Mostly petty squabbles and flagrant violation of the few rules this site has.

For the largest majority of the membership we are happy as clams, but there are just "little problems" that persist.

Again, it might be a case of a few bad apples spoiling the barrel, but we do see the larger picture and we do need to preserve the qualities this group was founded on.

I see these as small course corrections. I am glad everyone understands.

The 'Preview Post' button is still working and I use it a lot.
A different view can make you realize that what was 'crystal clear' to the writer 'ain't necessarily so' to readers.

Ray,

The picture posting problem will be corrected as soon as humanly possible. We have corrected a lot of damage that was done behind the scenes due to our friendly hacker two weeks ago. The picture posting tool was destroyed and will need to be fixed by our original programmer. When time allows.

Thanks for your patients

Hey Brock,

One suggestion might be to just keep the communication up. Every one knows that we are all busy, many with numerous things going on. So when these changes are made, just post an update of what and why they are there. This is really a great group so you will get the support, but it is frustrating when these changes occur, especially when it is coincidental to the recent hacking event.

A humble suggestion....as we get older, change is harder to accept!

Shane

I just think that it's a shame that Brock had to remove the edit button, but I fully understand. My wife ran an internet board for years, and some of the posters were masterful at saying something to get a bunch of people upset, then later editing to make it look like they had been mistreated.

It is funny that you say that because I am tweaking things behind the scenes quite a bit and most of it goes unnoticed (or if it is noone seems to care), but there are other things that seem to be "bigger"

I guess we just want the inner workings to seem effortless as much as we can and we want to keep as much drama as possible off the boards.

But I understand your suggestion and I agree... that might be a good way to go for bigger things.

Thanks.
