I need to get CA to fix a crack on a side that I would like to bend. Do any local stores sell anything that is worth it or must I order the adheasive from Stewmac or LMI?

Thanks!

And don't forget the accelerator. It will save a thousand curse words when your CA will ONLY stick your fingers together but do nothing for the wood you are trying to glue.

One trick is to brush it on your binding or any other part before you apply the CA. Or spray lightly. Does wonders and will set it off RIGHT NOW which in a lot of cases means a job well done versus a frustrating PIA.

Thanks for the quick response Michael, Hesh, and Larry. I have a Train/Hobby Shop that is about 500 feet from my house. I can stop by there tomorrow and pick some up.

while you're at it might as well get some unsticker for those rare instances when your digets become bonded....

Does anyone know if the accelerator weakens the glue joint?
I have no idea but was just wondering about it. I've never used the accelerator, but have thought about it.

Not exactly sure but the nature of CA may not lend itself to being weakened by the accelerator. It was explained to me, I believe on this forum, that CA is in essence a VERY VERY acidic plexiglass of sorts and anything it comes in contact with that is the slightest bit alkaline will solidify it immediately.

Some of the more acidic woods like Koa, (again info from a source more knowledgable than I) will not get it to go off so the accelerator is needed.

IF any of that assumption is true then the accelerator may only be quickening the CA to its final solidity and not weakening it in the process.

Hmmm...

Did I say I really don't know the answer to your question?

I don't know if it can weaken the joint or not. But I know it can make the CA turn white sometimes. This can be a real pain at times.

Even a bigger pain if you develop an allergic reaction to it as I have. Over the course of a year I went from zero reaction to asthma for two days after inhaling the fumes....I never had asthma before and CA is the only thing that causes the reaction. Talk about a bummer, its going to be hard to adjust to other methods as a substitute for CA. Good stuff but user beware.

Usually the super glue will go white if you spray it too much or too fast.
I use a light mist above the glue which falls on it as opposed to a "direct hit". This usually wastes a bit of accellerator, but makes up for it by not flashing white.

I would suggest putting some super glue on some paper or cardboard and spraying it immediately and directly,(away from anything you value). It will turn white and smoke from the reaction, and some of it will crumble once it cools. Try some variables, since a few practice runs like this will give you a good feel for applying it in any application.

Please put on some safety glasses prior to trying this. Sometimes the reaction will actually cause the glue to "spit"

I have been in discussions about CA where it was proposed that CA has not reached its true strength until it has been used with accelerator. I'll leave the conclusion to those with more chemical knowledge than me...just thought that was interesting.
I have had MUCH better luck with aerosol accelerator these days in keeping the white-ness of the CA away. The spray pump accelerates SUPER FAST and smokes as it quick cures it, leaving a white residue behind. The aerosol takes about 25-50% longer than the pump and does not whiten or smoke-cure, at least for me it doesn't. It leaves my CA looking very glossy and clear, like there's a drop of laquer on the piece instead of chalky cured CA.

I have also heard that it is stronger when accelerated. I have no chemistry to back it up, but I read it somewhere.

Paul, thanks for the tip! I usually spray it directly on the CA and then have a mess on my hands. Your way sounds like it will be much better. I'd much rather get rid of the white spots than save accelerator.

The aerosol accelerator provides more of a mist as well, allowing more control, and as a bonus...less waste.
Again, as I said in the previous post, I have found the aerosol much more friendly in giving me less white spots and streaks than the pump style. I hope there are others out there with this experience, too.

If you wipe down just before accelerator you will not get any whiting either.
