Official Luthiers Forum!

Joe spent the afternoon at my shop and what a nice guy. He's ready to dip his toe into our addiction so I gave him an idea of what he's in for. As already revealed on a different thread, Joe has extensive finishing experience so much of the learning curve is already covered. He has already contacted John Hall for a kit so I guess he has more than his toe wet already. I sent him packing with an armful of catalogs, periodicals and journals. That'll surely push him over the edge!

He is a great guitar player who also writes and records. It was refreshing to have my guitars played by someone who knows his way around a fretboard...I only hope my frets can remember the trip!

I'm really grateful to finally have another builder as a relatively close neighbor. We talked about starting an Indiana Luthier's Guild so if there are any other Hoosiers interested, let me know. That also goes for any members from neighboring states as well. I'll gladly volunteer my shop for the first meeting at a future date to be determined.

That is great...One of the cool things that I like about this forum is that not only do we get a chance to chat with other guitar people (both players and builders) from all over the world, but occasionally we get to meet each other face to face.

Some of us may never have a chance to meet but this forum is the closest thing to a pub where we can meet and talk about wood, tools, guitars and such.

All I can say is woahhhhh! I can't tell you what a great host and all around awesome guy that JJ was and again, I can't thank him enough for allowing me to drop in on his shop. I learned more in the couple hours with him that a months worth of reading and net searching! Then, to cap it all off, JJ allowed me to play his guitars. His waterfall bubinga (I think) was wonderful. It reminded me of some Lowdens and Avalons that I sampled one afternoon a Wildwood in Coshocton Ohio. The set-up was great, neck very comfortable and tone was woody and dry. It projected very well and I could have played it for hours!

JJ even loaded me up with a stack of reading materials and I think I have looked that darned Grizzly catalog from cover to cover three times. I'm having a hard time putting it down! 

JJ's shop and expertise were an inspiration to me and I can only dream of a day when I will be making my own sawdust. In time grasshopper,,,,,,,,in time.

Joe, welcome to the affliction! JJ, you'll have to bring him to the next MGL.

Hi Joe,

It's great to see an old friend here.

I just noticed you're getting your kit from John.
In my build thread you had asked about my Taylor GA molds.
Those all came from John so make sure and let him now that's what you're
interested in and I'm sure he can set you up.
