I'm sorry but with all due respect, who in the world ever thought that
memorial day weekend would be a good time for a trade seminar??

Which reminds me, we need to schedule the upcoming Michigan Luthiers
Guild meetings. I'm thinking Easter, then 4th of July.

As you can probably infer from my tone, I will be unable to attend.

Wish I could go, but I can't make it then, and it's too far to drive. Life goes on.

You couldn't get a much better line up than that!
I would love to go but I doubt I can make this one.
The last one was a lot of fun!

I'm definately planning on going. The Biannual ASIA conference is one top items on my must do list. It is too far for me to drive so I'll be flying in. I hope the make arrangements with FedEx or UPS or something to have a booth there. It would make life simplier to get the wood back home. Just having a good supply of long boxes would help.

Remind me, if I come up with some lame excuse for not going (like needing to get 10 archtops out the door), that money isn't everything.

Sounds like quite a lineup at the ASIA!!

I'll be driving out from Oregon for ASIA as part of a road trip to my grandson's graduation in Ohio, Atlanta BLADE custom knife show and the Smithsonian in DC.

I'll be having two trade tables filled with stacks of claro walnut sets, other sets, burl slices, acrylized inlay wood and other goodies.

The ASIA sympoisum will be in Springfield,MO. May 24th to 27th.
There was no intent to make it hard for a holiday, but those with gripes, got an idea, get more involved, run a full time shop, and at same time keep the GuitarMaker going as scheduled, and all time on phone for doing this and other duties that is involved. Sometimes mistakes as to dates happen. Once figured out that there was a conflict of holiday, thoughts were first to change it but arrangements had been made at the University where event is to be, along with other consideration. Bill has been spending most of his days now doing the preperation and work on this. This just doesn't happen without work. Rather than gripe about dates or whatever, a thanks for the work to Bill would be appropriate. I write this as an individual and not as representing Bill and ASIA. I work in his shop and see it first hand everyday.

This will be held at Drury University. The dorms and other facilitys at this University are top notch and know those who attend will be happy with the whole symposium. Hope to meet and talk to all of you here.

Stan Stan Stan,

I understand your being all defensive about this...
It's not that any of us have anything at all against Bill, he's a great guy, and we do appreciate the work he does. But some of us can't afford to fly to the venue since it moved from Maryland. There, we could drive. And several vendors we all know could drive with their wares as well, like The Zootman, John Hall, Steve Roberson etc. None of those folks can afford to ship all that wood to St. Louis, so they won't be going, at least as vendors. Many of us on the East coast who could drive to MD would go because being within driving range was convenient. I'm not going frankly because I cannot afford to fly out.
There are some terrific looking sessions this year, and I'd love to make it, but the travel is beyond my ability. The particular dates are harder for me too, but I'm not complaining...just stating my dissappointment at not being able to attend. There's a difference.

I think part of the reason for switching the venue was related to Don's complaint: just as there are folks on the coasts who can't drive to the midwest for a show, so there are folks there who can't make it to the coasts. This will be a chance for the midwest contingent of the organization to make a meeting. There's probalby no perfect solution for everybody.

No, there's not. No biggie, really. As you said, this gives some folks an opportunity to go who couldn't before due to the location. Nothin' wrong with that at all.

Stan interesting enough when I saw the agenda as it sits right now I sent Bill an email of thanks.   I had asked Bill sometime ago to consider sessions on advanced inlay and something dedicated to Archtop guitars and it certainly appears that he took my requests to heart.

Organizing conferences and the like is an incredible undertaking and often a thank less job. Hats off to Bill as I suspect he is carrying the biggest burden in organizing the event (no doubt he has enlisted Denise as well).

Looking at the prices paid to attend professional development seminars and conferences for my day job makes ASIA an incredible bargain. The information to be gleaned just from the folks you will meet over meals, the hallways, in the vendors area and socializing at night is more than worth the price of admission.

Stan glad to hear the facilities are good. Do you know if the dorms are air conditioned? (Still toying with the idea of staying in a hotel).

Nelson I will most certainly be hounding you to attend. Don’t forget that you want to visit Grizzly when you are there.

It's practically in my back yard this year and I'm not sure I can make it. The 24th and 25th are the last two days of school here and I'll be giving finals.

Don and others who may have taken offense on my remarks about not coming, I am truly very Sorry. Maybe I should have not done so in the first place, especially when p***sed.

What upset me (using forum proper language) was in one of the first post, that the dates were in essence dumb and whoever did it was stupid. Not in those words, but intent of them were there just the same. No thought that there may have been other reasons, for those dates. Just thought and think before folks get to much involved in griping about things, maybe should know all the facts. Take into concideration all the efforts that goes into organizing one of these events, while at the same time keeping shop running at full tilt. One of those and not a minor effort is getting the speakers set up and scheduled. They have shops and business's(sp) to take care of, so maybe a known holiday for days off would help that process. Just some thoughts.

If folks can't come due to any reason, that is not a problem with me or anyone else. Whatever dates were set, some couldn't come who may want to. There should never be an offense in that. There is no perfect date for all. I am sorry that some of you can't come. That is mostly a personal thing on my part, as I would love to meet you in person, as you have become friends on this forum. Don Wm's, John Hall, Zootman (if he can't) and others.

One reason put in Springfield, was it is close to middle of U.S. and not on either coast, and may help more to come.

I took offense at the tone of the one post, but I am one who has a rather short fuse, and maybe should have let it ride. Bill is more than my boss, he is a great friend and I reacted out of that. Again, sorry on my part for the initial tone on my part.

I am sure Bill will thump me on the head when I get back on Friday. I will just tell him it was Matt's fault.
