I've been so busy building that I haven't taken time to stop and take any
pics until today.

This is build #2. It is a redwood top and claro walnut back & sides in the
auditorium shape.
By the end of the week I hope to have the back on. After that, before I can
proceed I will need to build a jig to route my end grafts. (Any ideas will be
greatly appreciated).
I tried something a little different on the X-Braces on this one.
Rather that scallop the tail end I left them taller and thinner.
They appear thick in this pic but I think it's showing the thickness at the
base as they taper rather quickly and more true to the shape in
Cumpiano's drawings. Any thoughts?

Truly nice guitar Chris! That settles it...if I ever get off my lazy rear and get motivated to actually "do" something, I'm going to build with a redwood top. The more of those things I see the more I want something with redwood. Also, I'd love to see a closeup of that bracing, and rosette. Both look great.

Again, that's really sweet...and the shop is awesome looking. Clean.

Overall it looks really nice to my eye. I think the wood choice will be awesome. What shape is that? Also noticed you have your top on and haven't profiled the sides yet. Not that I know about these things but that's a different order than I have done it in.

Would love to see a close-up of the braces and what you are to talking about with their profile.

And your quaint little shop looks very organized and workable - nice job.

Hi Larry,

I guess we do as we are taught! My instructor always says "with failure
comes the questioning of the method". So, the way I learned it,
contouring the sides and fitting the back is the next step for me.

The shape is a Grand Auditorium made famous by Bob Taylor.
To my eye this is the best shape ever designed. (I know that's a highly
debateable subject, just my point of view).

I'll have to try again on the close-ups...they came out blurry.

Walnut makes a great sounding guitar too and bends easily, it light and
responsive, and of course a very pretty wood.

I am a huge fan of redwood tops. My main gigging axe is a redwood/EIR
OMD built by my instructor.
My first build was port orford cedar and the sister set of claro walnut so
I'm anticipating a smooth build on this one.

As for my shop... I have no choice but to keep it clean and neat.
For one, it's 14' x 14' which leaves no room for clutter.
Secondly, and most importantly, the way my mind works I cannot function
in clutter.

Hesh,

That was me that started that thread. When I went to glue the headblock
and tailblock it was obvious that the headblock was not going to fit the
mold. There was so much good advise offered up that it was a cinch to
pull off. I actually took your advise and marked the block with the contour
of the mold and shaped it on the sander. Quick & easy work! Thanks!

Chris, Looks great and the shop looks great too. I have to ask, did you make your own molds for the Taylor GA shape? That's the same shape I want to use for my first scratch build if I can't get a kit this size.

Very clean looking build Chris. I really like the way that redwood looks and sounds. Walnut too. One of my most successful guitars was a walnut bodied OM.

Did you clean up for the photo or is that the normal state of affairs in your shop?

Hi Joe,

The GA mold and the GA template for my bender both came from John Hall
at Blues Creek Guitars ,, one of
our fine vendors here.
I'm not that far away. You could come over some weekend and we could
bend your sides and make you a template if you'd like.

I guess it was my lust for guitars that I couldn't afford that made building a
natural next step for me.

No John, my shop is nearly this clean all the time.
I do not function well in clutter. Everything has it's own place so I don't
have to hunt for it and makes cleanup quick and easy and therefore I can
be more efficient with my time.
I have two small children who need lots of love and attention so many
days I may only get an hour or two to tinker. Don't want to squander my
time looking for the right tool or having to move everything off the island
bench so I can complete the next step.

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but in this photo my shop is a little
more cluttered than usual.

Yeah Chis, not that tough, when you get the guitar finished post the pics and I or perhaps any number of us will show you how to post a link to an mp3.

In its simplest form you upload the mp3 to your current web server, the same one that has all your other stuff on it, then point a link to the location of that file. Same as a pic that is hosted off of this site but the link points to the mp3 instead of the pic.
