We are very pleased to announce a new set of plans being offered via the OLF – a round shouldered vintage Gibson Dreadnaught.



We acquired several tracings of vintage Gibson AJ’s and J45’s and coupled this with a well documented bracing pattern from Gibson’s AJ model from the 1930’s. The resulting plan uses the AJ scale length and bracing pattern as documented, but the tracings from the vintage guitars.

If you are unfamiliar with Gibson AJ’s, Dan Erlewine and other well respected guitar aficionados believe that this was the best flat top ever built. And to the best of our knowledge our plans are the only ones available for this wonderful guitar. (BTW, thank John Watkins for drawing these up for us).

They come on 2 sheets that are 36” x 48” and are $24.95 + $2.75 shipping, they are ROLLED not folded.

The plans are ready to go and we will be printing them one off for each order received. They will usually ship within a few day of being ordered. To order simply follow the link below!

One thing is for sure, if John Watkins has drawn these plans up there is no doubting that they will be PERFECT. And rolled not folded, how cool is that, have you ever seen those old comedy skits with the guy trying to fold the map??? Yeah,... well that's me.

I am pretty sure John Watkins is going to offer some of this as well. You will need to make these molds from the plans though. You can't go from published specs.

Hey a couple notes about this plan...

If you have any experience with Gibson's you will know that they are known a bit for "approximate" measurements - at least with respect to the numbers they publish. (for instance there are at least 3 different versions of the 24.75" scale length).

Anyway. The outline of the body was taken directly from a tracing of a vintage instrument - the lower bout is 16 3/8" and the length is 20". This is a little different than published numbers. Also, the neck profile and the back braces were not available, so those are not in the plans, but I am sure all of you will be ok with that... I usually use plans as more of a guideline than a rule anyway.

but in the spirit of full disclosure, I thought it was worth mentioning.

when i get to the shop tomorrow i'll try to take a photo and make the neck profile templates. i was going to have to do it anyway to make the new neck so someone else might as well benefit.

the j45 is short scale 24.75" whilst the aj is long scale 25.5", but i imagine that the 1st and 12th fret profiles were the same for both, or sufficiently close that i would not be much of an issue..
