To me it looks like zebrawood or zebrano, or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

If it smells somewhat like a wet dog when freshly sawn, it's zebrawood, no question. Zebrano is about as dense as rosewood, and sometimes has a nice glassy and ringing tap tone. I have a billet thet rings like a bell. Unfortunately, I also have a billet that rings like cardboard and will be used for either sides or furniture.

If someone tried to sell it to me promising brazillian rosewood, well, I might be skeptical. In fact, I might say something I would regret later in life...

Well I gave it the scratch and sniff test today and what I came up with was a sweet tobacco smell.

It is also relatively waxy when sanded down to 300 grit.

The waxyness should eliminate rosewood and point more towards Goncalo with no abslute, "for sure" either way without the wood in hand.

I'll still stick to what I said earlier; either Zebrano or a kind of myrtle.
