So I'm laying out my inlay of Celtic knots drawing them off on the FB and wonder whether I should place them with the larger knot at fret 1 and go smaller toward the soundhole as is usual. When I look at DePaule's site he has the set going in the opposite direction. I need someone with a better sense of lay-out to look at the celtic knot set and give me your opinion. Would you place them as shown on Andy's site or do them in opposite order?

Thanks

Celtic Knot FB set

Ron

I think I'd do it the reverse of what Andy is showing. Otherwise you are going to have fretwire running through the inlays when you get up to the higher frets.

I'd go opposite to Andy's layout too. Seems to fit better with the smaller fb spaces between frets as you get closer to the soundhole.

Honestly, Ron, I'd just put one at the 12th fret.

Thanks, guys, I had them drawn on the FB opposite to what Andy shows, but I'm not sure which is best. I'll re measure their heights tomorrow and see if it can be reversed without fret interference. I have to use them all, Carlton, this is for someone else and he wants bling. The matching rosette is really nice and will be a challenge as it is made of around 100 pieces.    I do know the tape trick, though, and I believe I can do it. It's all white MOP, and I've got Andy's white MOP tuner buttons to go with it. My first commission, sort of, but I'm doing it at cost. It's for a guitar playing buddy of Scottish ancestry who competes in the highland games and such.

Yeah, I understand now. I've got an accomplished, experienced guitar-playing friend, and sure enough, he wants an acoustic with lotsa chrome. I'd been hoping that some of my refined taste( ) would rub off on him after over 40 years.

After seeing those two bad boys you built for your sons I would think your gonna get a lot of those kind of offers. Your friend is getting a real good deal!

I'm sure you could just lay the pearl and photo both samples to your buddy and leave it too him! Takes the pressure off.

Good luck Ron and God Bless!

Hi Ron,
all the pieces look to be the same height, so no matter which way you decide
to put them they should fit between the frets. I believe though, that they
should be installed the way Andy shows them because they are meant to get
wider as they proceed up the fretboard which is also getting wider as you
approach the sound hole. If you do them with the widest at the 3rd fret they
will appear to be "top heavy." (MHO).

Thanks, again, all.
Craig, I agree. I printed out the image and can study both ways side-by-side. Seems that the increasing width is more pleasing to me, too.

Ron, after reading Craig's post I went back and took another look. I have to agree with Craig. It just looks right getting wider as you go up the neck. I think if it were reversed it might be a little strange. Sorry to be so wishy-washy.

Ditto...
The increasing width is meant to be proportionate to the increasing neck width.

Ron,
After seeing Craig's post, I went back and looked again too. Andy's way
would look better. The wider ones looked taller, but they're not.

Well, they turned out to be of a height that I could do it either way. I routed my cavities today and I did place them so they get wider approaching the sound hole.

As soon as I get time to post a couple of pics, I want to show a new jig I made to make it easy to route cavities in a radiused FB, and a new router bit that is magic!!

Thanks for the input.

Ron

Ron, be sure to let us know how you like the MOP tuners. I'm very curious as to how they look/feel on your guitar.
