Btw, the top of the Les Paul is more or less carved. Still needs a sanding out but it should be back to you pretty soon.

These are the almost complete images of a much bigger fretboard and headstock scene that John K is making the guitar for.

Yes it's a larger statement politically, environmentally, or any other way you want to look at it.
The title of the piece is "share"

Share our home, share our world, share our universe, to the benefit of all, not just us humans. Whatever anyone else reads into it is fine. That what art does.
I always liked the styles of artists doing the animal/space motif, and new I could see it happen in an inlay.

The backdrop is quartz corian- looks like a starfield. The earth is lapis, brown lip pearl, and white river pearl, the dolphins are pale red abalone- with a lot of engraving and epoxy shading, the hyacynth macaw is lapis, black pearl, brown lip, and yellow corian.

There are three other animals- all with a bit of their environment with them- the macaw the forest, a panda with bamboo, elephant- serengetti, and a leafy sea dragon- sargassum algae.

The idea is to show a little of the Earth's diversity regardless of the species, however most I chose to represent are endangered. I guess the space idea also imortalizes them a little bit- a mood I was going for.

Space dolphins, cool. Reminds me of a party I was once at. Can't remember to clearly, but I'm sure there were space dolphins involved. Man that was a great party.

Hey! I was at that party to Paul. I think it was in someones backyard that looked like a rain forest just inland from Roslyn Bay, Yepoon in QLD.

That party grooved on from 1974 until 1992. The BBQ was particularly good, especially when served with the mushroom sauce and the cider and hand rolled cigars made for a great little night cap...Ah yes, the Space Dolphins, I miss them sometimes, Pink Floyd, Hand Rolled Cigars and Space Dolphins... what ever happened to them???

On a brighter note, a friend of mine who works in aged care tells me those dolphins sometimes come back to visit you in the declining years, best of all, if they do reappear, it will be chemically free...............

Oh, look, there goes one now!

What kind of ballpark $$ are we looking at for primo inlay work?

for the development and execution of the piece.

It's less about materials needed unless gold or gemstones are involved.
Once in a great while people e-mail me asking if I will use plastics or some lesser priced material to bring down a price point and I have to tell them that it really doesn't matter. It's more about what it takes to produce a piece than the materials cost at a certain point. engraving takes way longer than any of the actual inlay time.
