Lots of good advice above. When it's time for the final sheen, though, get some Flitz metal polish. Makes 'em look chrome-plated. It'll even make slightly scratched frets smoother and less annoying. It's also great for taking the tarnish off of all those neglected frets above the body join.    I repolished my frets just last night, and they shine better than new!
