Official Luthiers Forum!

Well, nine luthiers showed up today in Beebe Arkansas at Old Man's place. Ron Wisdom hosted the second Arkansas OLF Guitar Get Together and it was great.

I'll name names here in a minute. Ron and his wife are gracious hosts to the tenth power. They went above and beyond any expectation for the grub. Oh may, a regular barbeque lover's delight, with a huge bbq sandwich, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and get this: ribs that were 1 1/2 inches wide and a foot long each. No kidding. Then for desert, a homemade key lime pie that melted in your mouth and bread pudding with sauce that was out of this world. Thanks to both of you.

The guitars were really fun to see in person, we'll come back to that. Here are the attendees: Ron Wisdom from Beebe, Cecil Carroll from Missouri, Matt Jacobs from Pine Bluff, Joe McKay from Little Rock, Dave Rector from Oklahoma, Dave Rickard who drove 600 miles from Kansas, he got the door prize of a set of Microplane drums for the drill press, Paul Gandy from Ft. Smith, Bruce Dickey from Russellville, and Frank Kayter, a good friend of Ron's, from Beebe.

I have some great pictures and I'll try putting those up and linking to them momentarily. Many thanks to the Wisdom's for treating us like Kings, to the man. Wow, you blessed all.

I'll second what Bruce said. Ron you and your wife were great hosts, and put on quite a chow line for us. Plus, we got to see some old faces and a couple of new ones.

Oh man! A party at Ron's house, I would have loved to have been there. Ron is a great guy as to is Bruce and if I had been able to make it, I would have knocked off the door prize no worries.

Sounds like a great get together guys. Who knows, with the way they been mining the northern part of my home state in AU lately, maybe one day soon I will be able to drive there on the earth central expressway.

Thanks, guys, it was truly my pleasure. A lot of talent in this little southern group. I was impressed by everyone's new guitars. Matt's archtop is a real beauty and Paul really made it sing. I'm grateful that everyone came. Three new builders and they fit right in. I'll try and get a couple of pics up soon. I hope all luthiers are like the ones I've met.   I've got enough bbq left for another meeting.

More pics at the link above. Joe McKay brought his first. Dave Rector his Rosewood L-00. Matt also brought his first classical, with Gonco Alves, is that right? Very light guitar.

Paul Gandy brought a walnut cutaway, with the lowest action allowed by law. He has a thumbpick and knows how to use it.

Cecil handed me his little OM and it was nice. Maybe someone will have some pics I can add to the webpage? If so email them to bdickey@suddenlink.net I really fell down on the job in my picture taking..... bummer.
Ron had a pair of dreds, his own, and the one he made for his son Jeff.

Oh, and Matt brought his little 14 1/2 inch body guitar body. The one with the angled neck block and cutaway. That guitar has a maple armrest and silver inlay purfling, and a cool design rosette, that was quite nice. Go Matt.

All these pictures aren't making me feel good. I hurt my back the day before the get together and wasn't able to come. I'm glad everyone had a good time. I really missed getting together with all of you again. Will make the next one for sure.

Hey Jimmy D., We missed you buddy. It was a fun time. I couldn't believe it rolled around to 5 PM and I didn't even notice. Oh... Ron had your Barbeque for lunch today. I think they could have fed another ten guys, and no one would have left hungry.

I wish now that someone had done a PHOTO Session for Guitars as well as luthiers. So, for future get togethers an official photographer should be appointed. Last time we got individual shots of luthiers and their guitars, but we missed some this time.

Overall though, it was a huge success. Okay, six months from now, where's it gonna be? ASIA in Missouri? How about three months? That might work, it just might work.

I forgot to mention that Bruce also gave us some homemade hot sauce that is really good. Thanks Bruce. You just never know what to expect at these meetings, especially from Bruce.

Sorry I'm late to join in here, just needed a little sleep before trying to post anything.

Wow, what a great weekend! Ron and his wife are the best hosts you could find anywhere. We all gathered around in Ron's living room ( did you know he takes pictures that look like Ansel Adams took them) and waited for the whole group to arrive. While we were waiting for everyone to get there we had plenty of time to check out each other's guitars. Ron also builds a mighty fine guitar. He had one of the twin guitars that he built for his sons there. It is beautiful.

As more guys started to show up we had even more guitars to look at. A guy that I had met through email who lives in Little Rock showed up and brought a very nice first guitar. His name is Joe and we invited him to check out the OLF. Cecil came and I finally got to meet him. He brought a cool OM he built. Bruce didn't bring a guitar but he brought some tonewood and tuners and other stuff. Matt brought his archtop which was probably the nicest guitar there and a new classical he built that is as light as a feather. Dave Rickard drove in all the way from Wichita ( you thought I was the crazy one) and brought a nice dred. Paul Gandy brought the guitar that he brought last time (sorry Paul I can't remember what style it is).

After getting acquainted for a while and checking out each others guitars we headed down to Ron's shop. Ron has really done a nice job of organizing and with his new dust collector it was so clean even Hesh could have worked in there.

Matt did a demo on using a tablesaw to cut your fret slots. Great job Matt!

And after a while looking things over in the shop Ron's lovely wife called us in for lunch. We had some great barbeque with tater salad, cole slaw and baked beans. And there was a stack of ribs on the counter that was taller than me. I am kinda short though. Ron's wife made key lime pie and bread pudding but I was so full from the barbeque that I didn't make it to dessert.

After lunch we just played each others guitars some more and went back to the shop and looked at some of Ron's jigs and generally just kinda hung out with each other.

Thanks again Ron for allowing us into your home and shop. I know I had a great time and I'm sure everyone else did too.

I had ribs for lunch yesterday and a bbq sandwich today. I even ate 1/2 a bbq sandwich with my coffee for breakfast this morning. No kidding. And I still have one left.      Maybe I should mail it to Jimmie, since his back kept him from coming.
