Assuming that the guitar sides are approx .080" thick, and standard kerfing is used, how wide can a single binding ledge be without compromising the overall strength of the guitar?

I route to 90 thou for binding, and routinely see the kerfing - its done all the time.

The only thing to watch out for with visible kerfed linings post-routing: excessive and over-zealous use of superglue to stick the stuff on. It can make a right mess of the inside of your guitar. Go on. Ask me how I know.

I think thats one of the beauties of reverse kerf bindings...much more difficult for the glue to drip down into the guitar.
I usually go through my sides all the way in many places and see kerfing exposed when routing my binding channels.

Solid linings make it even simpler, though they have their drawbacks as well.

This discussion points out the structural role of the bindings- they're not just decoration, so material (wood vs plastic) and glue choices should make a difference in longevity and even sound (in theory).
