I have no idea how to charge for inlay. Here is the lay out.
The inlays are about $35.

Well, I have no answer to your question -- but I really like the design you
have there. The different orientations of the same inlay shape is very well
done.

Is the question how much should I charge for insetting these and finishing them - given they are costing me $35.00 from the inlay cutter source pre-cut?

Or is it - I designed these- they are costing $35.00 in pearl - per ounce, and I still have to cut them out, and finish the job.

It really depends on a lot more than the price of the pearl.

    I price my inlay trying to figure $50 an hour labor rate. I double up my pearl when I cut using rubber cement , then separte them with solevent. I think you should be able to cut them out in less than an hour so say $75 for pearl and labor
Inletting that may take a bit of time. Also about 1 hour so $125 is not too high for that layout.

I’m certainly not a pro but based on my first attempt at inlay I would charge plenty. Just inlaying a Paua letter on a test piece of wood makes me respect anyone who can do it well. At this point I will be satisfied if the inlay is even somewhat acceptable

My advice is don’t sell yourself short. Your work and your extra effort should be compensated appropriately.

That looks very simular to one I did last year.



I charged more than tippie's quote, but I also have the snakewood vine in there too. The price was also lumped it in the the rosette and some other inlay on the headstock, so I am not exactly sure how it broke out pricewise. I also cut my own inlays, so material cost was relativley low, but the time labor time was higher.

Where I quoted this job low, was in design time. The guy I made this for did change is mind a lot during the design and that took more time than actually implementing it.

I think for the type of inlay we're talking about, an hourly rate makes the
most sense. If you were going to put position markers on the fretboard
anyway.... the added charge would only be for the extra time needed for
making the recess a different shape.   I hope this makes sense.

If I charged the "hourly rate" I normally get making guitars then it would come to around $10 in total

Jon - I'm not usually a big fan of fingerboard inlays but that is really lovely. I think the snakewood vine is just sublime
