Im am a manufacturing engineer by by day and a luthier by night. The day job pays too much for the wife to allow me to luthier full time
^^^ Ditto what he said ^^^ Same occupation, same problems!
Darn Tim with your proficiency I figured for sure you were full timing it. If I not wrong I think there are about 3 or 4 of us here that are engineers.
Michael:
I must tip my hat to my Engineering background as that has enabled me to be extremely efficient with my time, building & thought processes. I still would like to go full time tomorrow if it weren't for the vested efforts I have accumulated on my day job. Just a few more years and then I can join Hank and others ...

Carlton--At about 150 hrs. each on 20 instruments per year...
lets see, that's about 3000 hrs or 60 hrs/week on top of 40 day job. Hey, bet if I'm eliminated all sleep it can be done!
Actually I am fairly well tooled and manage to build eight to ten per year. I don't hesitate to buy any tool that will increase productivity. Even farmed out most of the neck work including fretting at one time which helped a great deal. Problem is the friend doing it wanted a life also.

Those of you having trouble deciding if you should leave your day Job just need to do what I did. Get Fired I suppose I am full time but I do a lot of other things to help supplement my income.

I've been a software engineer for almost 30 years. I still like it and I'm good at it. Instrument building is a hobby for me and probably will be until I retire and then I may try to seriously market my work. Until then, they are accumulating around the house.
I have to agree with Mattia about the "avid hobbyist" description. Maybe even "madly avid hobbyist with a tendancy toward obsession"

Skip
Actually, you're right. That's much more accurate.

I'm a full time minister and part time luthier for the past 10 years. I'd like to go full time but my boss won't allow me to quit my job.

You miscombobulated my unintentionables...I meant stock up NOW in preparation for your retirement in 6yrs! That way you get to keep the bennies AND be ready to kick lutherie butt when you can give it full time.

Working as a Luthier is one of the few "full time jobs" I know of that pays a "part time salary"
