This is a support group for Rod True and anyone else who's probably
burried in assignments right now. Band together!

I'm struggling through the the first of three papers due in the next two
days, highlighted articles and books all over my desk and the floor
around me.

Yesterday morning Dr. had us come to an extra-curricular book
discussion (four hours!) that could hurt but not help our grades. Half of
us walked straight to the library after.

Wake me when it's over... I'm great when the writing's creative, but this
academic stuff has got to be the most awkward and taxing work I've ever
done.

James...I understand where you are coming from. It has been many years since I was in school but what a grind! It was all worth it BUT it certainly was a lot of work. Hang in there!

I loved school but it about killed me. I worked 40 hours a week through most of my college years. The job went from
5 pm to 1:30 am. I don't remember sleeping during those years.     The most nerve racking part of my graduate degree wasn't the papers, though, it was having oral finals. Sitting around a large oval table with all my graduate professors asking questions.

Ouch. I've had some of those oral exams. It's like dinner with the
Gambinos.

What did you study?

I've been doing Electrical Engineering for the last few years while working full time. I've had to cut back to only one subject a semester lately... Two young kids on top of work and study will slow you down some! Since I'm in the military, it's the deployments that can really hurt when it comes to assignments and exams. All those pesky long days, hard work and alcohol makes study hard!

Undergrad and 1st grad degree was physical sciences, mostly chemistry as an undergrad, then mostly physics in grad school. After I started teaching math for the local college, I went back to school for my education hours and picked up enough hours for a 2nd masters in math.   The highest level I've taught, though, is college trig. I couldn't work a calculus problem now if you paid me.

I recently found out that, instead of the 22 days I thought I had, my masters thesis had to be submitted in one week. The end date is this Friday, so we'll see how this week turns out :)

At this stage in the game I really sort of wish I'd gone somewhere with a course-based masters program instead of a thesis, but when I entered I thought I'd end up doing a PhD. Starting to build guitars and buying a machine shop changed that career path...

On the flip side, I've always liked oral exams. I've got a goldfish type memory, but I come across as a smart guy if you talk to me so I tend to perform better in the tougher classes if it's an oral exam.

James I'm very honored that you started this thread thinking of me, thank you my friend.

Right now, your the one who needs all the support you can get.

James, your a warrior. You can fight through this. Stay focused, it's only for a short time. Make short goals and try not to see the large amount of work in front of you. One sentence at a time. It will flow out of you, I know it.

And sorry, I'm a day late on this, I was finishing up the last of my grueling papers which needed to be in the mail today to be on time.

Now I have 3 weeks till two exams than I'm done till Sept.

You can do it James.

And when your done those three papers, rent Rocky Balboa, ya it's a little cheesy, but any Rocky movie is all about digging deep and finding a way to win.

I'm enjoying the recovery process here. I proof-read, turned those things
in, gave copies to my librarian mother, and asked her not to mention
anything to me for at least two weeks    Two days later and I'm
starting to feel normal.

Bob, finding something out like that about a thesis would make me ill... I
hope you're doing ok with it.

All you science and math guys make me feel inadequate. Mine will be in
education/reading. I don't think I could do algebra to save my life.

James never ever feel inadequate with respect to others strengths. Ask the guys who are strong in algebra if they woud feel comfortable in education/reading. (Ron I suspect would be the exception).

Bob -- surprises like that aren't pleasant. Good luck with it.

Don't worry about Rod. He's chosen a path and is pursuing it with vigour and will do well.    

Thanks Anthony! I just saw this or I would've responded sooner.

I'll offer a trade. If anyone ever needs help improving their reading
retention, I'll gladly trade it for some graphing lessons!
