Now for constructive criticism of flaws, wait, I was looking at mine. Nice work, keep it up. As we know finish is a big deal and yours is very nice. You have a lot of good detail stuff in this guitar, you should be proud.

Like others before me have said   I wish my first will look as good. My aspirations would have my first guitar looking as nice as yours. My fear is that it will look like a box and sound like doo. My expectations are for an acceptable looking and fair to good sounding instrument. Apparently one of my problems is that I’m dyslexic. I start every session with the guitar in error free mode but my brain and skill change it to feel free to make errors mode. What can I say but I’m still hanging in there. I can say how much I appreciate the members of the OLF in their ability to share information and provide support.

Doug,

It really looks very nice.

Speaking of experience I must say beware of the sophomore slump on #2!

Looks like you're well on your way!!

Thanks again for all the kind comments.  To answer a few questions...

My only previous experience with a spray finish was my kitchen cabinets, which still aren't quite done.  Priorities!

You caught me...I did not make the purfling from lumber.  Although I just purchased a bunch of veneer stock and plan to make my own from now on.  Most of the purfling available from suppliers uses paper for the black, and I don't like not having everything wood.  I have pear wood veneer that has been pre-dyed to a jet black and a nice, white hard rock maple.  Both in .023" - should make nice purflings.

I plan to do two guitars simultaneously next time and have been debating on what woods to use.  I'm a serious wood junkie and have been hunting and gathering for years - probably have enough stock for 40 guitars.  One of the next ones will be macassar b/s with engelman top.  I have a block of very nice western red cedar that was cut in Alaska 40 years ago, but haven't decided on the most appropriate b/s material.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  If anyone is interested in some of that I'll probably have 10 sets or so available when I get around to resawing the block.

The head stock inlay is a Scottish Thistle.  The thistle is a common theme in art deco design and I want to incorporate more of the distinctive elements of that style in the future.

I originally wanted to build a guitar because I didn't think I could get the wife to sit still for me spending the money on yet another guitar.  Little did she know .    At this point I hope to build 1 or 2 per year for friends and family.

Doug

Waddy-
YOU'RE KIDDING RIGHT?? Finish nailer???
No No No, a roofing nailer is much better. The nail is a bit beefier and it has a nice wide/flat head. For guitar building - Finish nailer bad... roofing nailer good. Got it?

Wow Doug! That's a stunning guitar! That finish is mint too!

Top drawer first effort

[QUOTE=redennis3]

How are you ever gonna work your way to the top if you start out there?

Nice geetar.

Yep, Red is correct. It's all downhill from here, so you might as well quit now while you're ahead (um, so the rest of us can catch up! )

Hoo-Wee, that sure is nice!!!

I just finished my first guitar, but after seeing these pictures, I'm not posting any of mine. I am proud of you Doug. It is quite a job you did. I think I need a lesson in finishing.

Looks great, congratulations.

The wood combination is a classic...you couldnt go wrong with that choice. I like that you went with macassar ebony as it has just enough color variation to get noticed. Black Ebony can look unreal because of how even the color is but macassar has those lighter patches that draw the eye to the edges.

Well done, Enjoy!

Wow. I can't believe how good you got that binding, and the neck joint. At least please tell me you had some struggles with set up. It might make me feel better. As far as the keep it simple on first guitar part... I found this impossible due to the many errors I made. Incredibly smooth finish.
