I always log on to the OlF, but only occasionally to MIMF. Each has its own merits. There is a tremendous amount of information available in the archives at the MIMF. In contrast, there is a real commradarie at the OLF. With a few exceptions, most of the builders here are relatively new at the craft. This gives us an opportunity to learn together and share our failures and successes and to get valuable input from our experts. I've been a member here for a couple of years, old software days, and have watched the OLF grow in membership and available info. I'm sure it will continue to get better and better. There are lots of available forums but not enough time to follow them all. I am happy to make the OLF my priority. Lance, did you have any idea 2 years ago that the OLF would have progressed this far?
no

Hi John,
I have most of your videos and they've been very informative and helpful to me. Someone over on that other forum asked about where he could find more info on using fox side benders... Trying to be helpful, I left a post recommending your side-bending DVD. Next time I looked at the thread, Deb had deleted my post.
Mario commented that she runs it like a business. Perhaps like a business you'd find in some dictatorial third-world country ! In all fairness, the mimf is a good forum... but the personal vendetta the webmaster seems to have against you is quite unprofessional.

As a rank beginner (in Lutherie, anyway. I have been a woodworker for 30 years), I found and still find the MIMF rather intimidating. While I can get my questions answered, I always feel as though I am intruding. Here, I feel at home.

As for the MIMF archives, I'm one of those idiots who can never seem to put in the right search term! so they don't help me much.

For those who support Deb's rules etc., I can see your point but one has to ask, why? If the fear is relentless commercialism and self-promotion, why has it not happened here? Sometimes the ship can be so tight, it cracks. But, it is her forum and she can do as she pleases but since I have found this forum, I haven't felt the need to go to the MIMF more than twice.

Regards, Steve Brown

In defence of Deb I am the one that recently had my Latin Tag (laborare est orare) removed from my postings. It is the moto I have taken for my business and had been my Tag for a year or so. I didn't even think about the fact that it was religious. When Deb removed it she personally apoligised for having to do so and made it clear it had nothing to do with what I had put down but rather that rule was put in place because of some offensive behaviour years ago. Because it was in Latin no one thought anything about it but a week or 2 ago someone asked what it means and she had to remove it as a religious refference. The reality is all she was doing was being consistant. If she didn't remove my reference, which probably wouldn't offend anyone (I always say those who get it get it and those who don't don't worry), others might complain about her not being consistant. In a recent thread at MIMF about cases I Had given my expereince with a particular company and then after someone else shared the same basic story I made a negative coment about the company. I was told to just stick to the facts. Again I broke the rules and I didn't need to throw in that comment as the facts were already out there. She runs a tight ship and does a good job. Lets stick to talking about what is good in this forum and not what is bad in others. arvey38487.4704398148

I should mention that I have been popping in here from time to time and just reading. Orriginally I wasn't finding the information I needed so didn't get active here but I have realised that there does seem to be a real community here which I like and am getting a little more involved here now. Lance is great and doing a fantastic job here. Keep it up.

I used to me a regular on the MIMF too, but with all the rules, it just drives me crazy. I'm always looking over my shoulder waiting to get caught at something I didn't even know I was supposed to do. I have never had a problem with Deb, but her ship is just too tight for my tastes. Way to go Lance, I think I'll stick around here for awhile. It is just my style of forum. But to each his own.

"Work is prayer"

I'm in deep do, then. When I have to work and don't particularly feel like doing so, well, umm, it is less than prayer, although I'm apt to recite a few choice words from the Bible while doing so, in French, of course.

Edit: For those who've never had the pleasure of watching a French speaking Canadian slam his thumb with a hammer, all I can say is that the cursing could be mistakened for a Sunday School recital, except fot eh tone in the voice....<g>

What's the latin for "work sucks"?Mario38487.9080671296

huh? I edit the message, and it re-posted itself twice.

I deleted the content here, but how can I delete the entire post?

And why is this forum, good as it is, so slow, anyhow? At this time of night, it should be flying, but it takes forever to get around in here. Thought we'd fixed this, but it's never really been up to speed; we just got used to it <g>Mario38487.9102199074

Good to know.... I have something I need to check.

There is a "service" to notify you of threads that update via email. My theory is that once that service has been activated it causes the server to "clog up" with un sent updates. (We have seen this before).

I will check it tomorrow. Once they are cleared out the server seems to run much faster. (It is always pretty fast for me though... regardless of where I connect.)

Brock - the email notifications are turn off - and have been. Mario are you using the "active topics" button? This is a good option for anyone suffering from a slow down. Me - at work and home- this baby FLIES! Ive never experienced a slow down since the new server went online.

Once they have been turned on... even for a second, we see problems occur. I have been telling Jesse that we need to permenantly disable this service.... but we have just not gotten to it yet.

I will look in the queue today to see if there are messages piled up.

I was on the forum at the same time Mario posted last evening and it was plenty fast. Might have been a clogged up ISP.

Lance, no, I'm not using the active topics thing. I'm only following a few threads. But it isn't just last night, it's all the time. For example, I just loaded this thread, backed out to the main page, then came back in to this thread. That took about a full minute. Just loading this thread took about 25 seconds. It should be 90% text, which is tiny....

Ij the same amount of time, I was able to skim 4 threads on the MIMF. Not saying that to piss anyone off, just to give a direct comparison. This forum's been slow since you moved it from where it was in the beginning, methinks. I just think that for a stand alone server that you have, it should be flying for everyone, no?

Just curious. It makes it hard to get around here at times; when I was trying to edit my posts last night, it was murder.

Of course, I am impatient... <bg>

for comparison, it takes me 3-4 sec on average to return to the main forum from a thread, while the journey is almost instantaneous from main to thread on my dsl link. i've not noticed any differences at any time of day, peak hours or not.

that being said, it is still noticably slower on the return to main than mimf for instance, which is almost instantanwous in all its multiferous directions.

when I click my shortcut in Safari on my cable connection it takes 3
seconds for the forum front page to totally load. About the same time for
the MIMF. But the individual threads at the MIMF load almost in an
instant where here it takes about 2-3 seconds. I'm not complaining
cause if you only have to wait 2-3 seconds for information then That is
groovy... Ahh I remember the 26KBS modem days...

I live at the end of a long copper wire, we don't have DSL or cable or any other broadband sort of connection. I get about 26KB Max. My neighbor has a satelite connection (Too much $$$ for me) and a wireless network set up so if I'm in the right corner of the house and no one is parked in the way I can hop on the net with him but it's a pain. Oh well, I still like being out in the boonies.

Must be something with the internet routing coming my way that makes it slow for me, then. I'm on a high speed connection here, too.

I'm not kidding: I hit "reload" on the main page here to check for new messages, and in another tab, I can view and read 4-5 threads on the MIMF before the main page has completely loaded.

I've never had speed problems. Mario, what browser are you using and what version?

You could try going here and testing the speed of your DNS hosting.Scott Thompson38488.8085069444

Mozilla Firefox, but it's slow on IE, too.

I consistently test at over 400. My end is fast(or I'd complain to my ISP, which I did when it wasn't as fast as was promised <g>)
