Don Ken and Bob, I think you guys nailed it, I went on an image search and it looks pretty much like it.

Pau Ferro sample

It may not be the best wood for my shop, my dust collection is not the best ie shop vac. Too bad what a beautiful wood.
I noticed another common name is Santos Rosewood. Is it a real rosewood?
Does anyone know what kind of reactions it can cause?

My guess would likely be pau ferro as well .. walnut has a distinct odour when sanded, and I have sanded/used a lot of walnut in furniture, none ever looked like that board - the ole sniff test would do it for me. I am also with Bob on the pores .. not big enough for walnut.

Hey Bob .. maybe we can get that border crossing guy to check and see for sure - wasnt he was a walnut "expert"

David, here is a good site that discusses wood hazards. Although this site deals with body jewelry, it contains good information on lots of sensitizing woods also used in guitar building. Wood Hazards:

David it's not a true rosewood but sure looks like one. Reactions are varied but include respiratory.

I think that list jsut goes to show that a dust collection system and a mask are good things to use.

It's not walnut. My money says it's Pau Ferro aka Bolivian rosewood.
