I have just come into a stash of vintage [1959] Sitka that is pretty amazing stuff. I have 4 bundles of 6' boards 1.5" thick x 5" - 6" in width. These were still wrapped in brown paper, tied in twine and banded with steel bands. Shipping label was dated 1959. They have been in an attic for 40+ years and are straight and dry [7% MC]. These would make some fine mando or violin tops. email me if you are interested.2005-01-10_210634_Spruce_Bundle_1.JPG2005-01-10_210850_No_Hooks.JPG2005-01-10_210901_Posey_Mfg.JPG2005-01-10_210911_Eugene_Planing_Mill.JPG

I would think this material would make superior braces if it is quartersawn.

Yes, on both accounts. What is really unique is the color of the wood. It is a nice "aged" golden brown color [all the way through] with lots of cross grain silking.

I have another stash [which I didn't tell you about] that is 10" wide! Sorry, it's not for sale

Tim,

Hey very cool! How the heck do come accross such incredible finds? I think all of us tone wood addicts dream of doing just that.

Tim Tim Tim Tim Tim.........tsk tsk...shame on you!

How much $ will it take to pry a set or two of that wide stuff from you? C'mon...everyone has their price! Sitka happens to be my personal favorite of the Spruces. C'mon Tim....

Hey, don't forget who's giving you first crack at a set of Brazilian!

Definitely some ukulele tops.

The uke world is still slavishly lusting after the "traditional" all koa or mahogany instruments, but spruce and other fine topwoods are making inroads, especially at the higher end.

You proposing a trade? All the sitka for a set of Brazilian might be fair.....how many sets are we talking about? What's the quality like?

I'm cause I don't have any Brazilian or old spruce. But I got some zoot wood.
In fact I found a pink slip in the mail this morning to go
to the post office from BobC and that's what I'm gonna do
as soon as I get out'a here.
