That's your best and most detailed tutorial yet, my friend. It's too bad I'm still in the stone ages and bending by hand on a propane heated pipe!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing the other how-to's that will hopefully accompany this gorgeous guitar's progress... That Koa from Volcano, one of our very fine sponsors, sure is mint!

Psss, I don't think the braces go there...

Hesh, they should add some of your tutorials to the "Jigs Tools & Techniques" of this forum. Or maybe even create a "Hesh's corner" or "Tootman's tutorials" for all of your tutorials.

Seriously though (not that that wasn't serious), the tutorials that you have created are priceless and I'm sure will be very handy to help answer questions that those new to lutherie, like myself, will have as we go through the process.

Keep 'em coming!

As a beginner I am getting more and more worried about how much kit i am gonna have to buy. Molds, binding jigs and even a side bender i may be able to build myself I guess.

Barry,

You can go as low tech as you want with luthiery. External molds and Fox benders arent the only way to go. There are as many approaches to building a guitar as there are luthiers......one of the main reasons I love luthiery.

Yes! Another fine tutorial by Mr. Hesh! Absolutely deserves a round of applauds!

Great Photos!

Excellent explanations!

In depth procedural details!

Hesh my friend, I know everyone has already said this, but, YOU are really GOOD at this tutorial stuff!

Each time I come to the OLF now, I keep my eye open for the latest HESH TUTORIAL!
Knowing full and well I‘m gonna to pick up some valuable knowledge in guitar building.

Thank you so much, for putting in all the time and effort for us!

You know, I think Blain is onto something!

I think you deserve some kind title (sort of speak)

“Hesh’s Tutorials” Uhh! To bland.

OK! Here’s another one,

“Hesh’s Lutherie Lessons” Mmmm, Maybe? A little formal though.

Another one, (Blain take off)

“Hesh Toots” OK, I think we all know where that one is going!

Alright, I exhausted my brain. Anybody else got some ideas!

That would be great!  We would have a TOOTMAN and a ZOOTMAN in the same forum.  We should all be proud to know such fine masters in the field.

Nice work, Hesh! Yeah, you should really consider producing instructional books and DVD's. You got the chops!

Great tutorial, Hesh!

I have a simpler shop made version of the Fox bender (surprise!) and I use no springs to hold bouts against the form, I just use my hands so I can feel the resistance in the wood. I did try springs, but yu lose some control IMO so I took them off. I have attached a bolt to each end of outer steel slat that I attach to the base when the bouts are bent. I then tighten down the last centimeter or so of the waist caul to press the outer slat firmly against the inner layers of the "stack" as you call it so the sandwich is very tight. This seems to take care of any ripples with curly wood as you mention. My bender is heated both with a blanket and bulbs.

Another important task, presented well!

I thought for sure that BOG stood for "Bothersome Old Geezer!" Well, live and learn.

I have two questions: How does the blanket handle all that pressure? and why do you need so much of it?

I made my own albeit limited bender that I used only on myrtle, which is easy I know, but found not a whole lot of force was necessary. I actually used bungee cords and simply spring clamped side ends down. It was easier than trying to figure out what size springs to get. It worked fine but I'm worried about trying it on my Koa set. I really had a hard time with some dark brown and brittle bindings (don't know what kind of wood)I tried bending, until I finally surrendered to using maple, which was easy again.

I wish I could upload a picture of my bender, but I'm lost on resizing it to below 200 kbs. There are some pictures in my yahoo mail that are small enough but I can't get them attached to here either. Doa!

By the way. Thanks for that excellent tutorial. I know these things take a lot of effort. You all's technical know how is most impressive, both with luthiery and computers. I hope I get there some day.
Boy is it a struggle sometimes.
