As I said, it must be a routing thing from where I am to where you are, I guess.

Have you tried a trace route...

Open a command line prompt and type in

"traceroute www.luthiersforum.com" and see what comes back. I would be interested in seeing the results. It should show if one of the hops is inordinately slow.

I used "Neo Trace" and the results are inetresting.

"luthiersforum.com" goes to Toronto, only.

"http://luthiersforum.3element.com" goes to columbus, ohio, via a handful of zig zagging.

Jim, I agree that Richard's handle wasn't offensive at all, and I'm sure DEb would say the same as us. The problem lies with the fact that if she allows one, then someone else will start using other ones, and they'll use the old 'well, you allow _him_ to keep his' routine. Next thing she knows, she's puting out fires... I know this happens all the time, because I was a staffer there for years, and it is unreal how childish some folks are(and you'd be surprised who the biggest whiners were). I hate having that many rules to abide by, trust me, but I do understand why they're in place. A good example is the craziness that caused us to lose Bruce, here. He ain't coming back anytime soon, if ever. That should never have happened, but left to fend for themselves, kids will be kids, and someone will get hurt. Put in a few rules, and a few enforcers, enforce them fairly and consistently, and it will run smoothly. Yes, it takes away from the 'looseness'(that we have here) but it's the price to be paid.

A friend of mine posted my first living sea one guitar on MIMF when it was first completed because he thought it deserved to be seen by other luthiers. He suggested my website to look at for others. It was immediately taken down, and he was sent a not so nice e-mail about pushing my services on others. Give me a &^%*&** break.

This forum rocks and it's all due to the members being honest, open, and intelligent. Really, how hard is it to just get along, help, and inspire one another? Can't others be inspired without fear of one's checkbook being blown open while flaming the other similar services for "not being as good as that new guy" If people like my work they contact me. If people like someone else they contact them. I'm still here.
On another note, John, congrats. Retirement into the world of full time luthiery. Sorry to see a science teacher step down. The world needs you more than ever now, guess those shoes will go empty.

Craig L

Craig - you could not be more right! I feel that allowing us all to self govern ourselves has nurtured a real-true-community feel. I'm not going to take any credit for this "forum concept" thought. The model for the OLF can be found at www.13thfret.com Dave S has been the one to foster the community feel, less rules more fun = good people thing. I tip my hat to Dave and say thank'yee! Give credit where credit is due!LanceK38489.4172222222

I agree with Mario and again state that Deb made it clear to me there wasn't a problem with my Tag but If shee let the door open it could lead to trouble. I also note that the MIMF has been around a long time and has had to deal with some problems over the years. My impression is that the rules were generally brought in when Problems developed. Down the road we may need to bring in some rules here as well (hopefully not). Freedom is lost when others abuse the freedom. From what I understand at one point people were using very overtly religios tags to try to Evangelise" people on the Forum and they finally had to put a stop to it in order for the forum to run smothly. As far as Promoting Comercial websites I understand that at one time a few people were trying to use the forum to try to self promote or promote friends and it was taking away from what the forum was ment to do. So they had to put a stop to that. At the same time, you can't give a URL for a site but you can tell people what to type into the google search to find the site so waht's the problem. When I finished my first guitar I posted pictures and, because of how excited I was, I started talking about how great it was and what other artists had said a bout it. I was very quickly asked to refrain from "self promotion" and some of my posts were removed. At first I was offended but then it was explained to me that they had had problems in the past with some people self promoting so much that people others were leaving. I see that now. I don't want to go to a site where people are continually talking about how great they are. MIMF has been around a long time and has had to set up a lot of rules. Maybe some of them could be revisited and relaxed a bit but regardless, let's no knock the MIMF because 10 years from now OLF may have been forced to adopt policies to keep this forum running smothly. I worked for many years as a University Chaplin and for a long time were were able to function and work with all the religious groups freely. But then some new groups (cults?) started getting involved on campus and the university had to step in and develope guidelines for appropriate religious activities on campus. I didn't like it but I recognised that because of a few groups that abused the freedom we had we all suffered, but it was for the good of everyone. Rejoice in what we have here but also be thankfull for the MIMF as it also meets a need.

jwsamuel, yes, I know...that tag is should no more offend than say, "cleanliness is next to Godliness"...(if whoever said that ever saw my shop, he'd say I'm going straight to hell! )...but, people are funny somtimes, it is Deb's party, and if that's the kind of cake she wants she is entitled...I like it here tho...seems homey!

As well, with the Tag it was there gfor probably a year and would likely have been left up but someone asked about it and I explained what it meant and my reasons for taking it as my motto for my guitar building ( after being in fairly high profile ministry for many years I left and am now building guitars) so for me this is a religious, or better yet spiritual, thing. It was at that point that Deb took it down and let me know it wasn't what I said but abuses in the past. I also like this forum very much and was just thinking, we probably couldn't have a discussion like this at the MIMF. Way to go olf
