Here are my second (LP Special-1st electric) and third (OM cutaway AE-second acoustic) The bulk of the work on both guitars was completed at the Wells Workshop in Luray VA under the guidance of Sylvan. Sylvan, you rock!!


LP Special Mahogany, ebony, EMGs, (POLY finish!)minutes before it was received as a graduation gift. One of my wife's(high school english teacher) former students just graduated from Full Sail in FLA and we gave this to him as a surprise!! (He was pretty stoked).



Sitka, EIR, mahogany, maple, walnut ply neck, cutaway OM w/Schertler Bluestick PU in the hands of her happy new owner! (my first commission) (He's pretty excited too!)

Kahle, great looking guitars. It's apparent you are "into" music. That OM is fabulous. And the LP looks really nice. More Pics? Closeups? Commission on the third, wow, nothing like paying customers, er clients.

Okay, tell us about that Virginia Tech Sports Blanket in picture one. I see you are a police officer too. Musician/Luthier/Policeman, interesting combo.

Thanks guys. These are out the door but I plan on taking more (hopefully better) photos of future projects. Unfortunately the surroundings in the acoustic photos are not mine. It is the home studio of the gentleman pictured in the photo. (If I put one of those in basement it would have to replace the shop area!)
The VT blanket that the LP is sitting on is in my basement rec room. It wasn't taken as a "tribute" photo (photo was actually taken 03-11-07) but we are pretty big Hokie fans here. My family is mostly VT alumnus but there are a few UVA folks sprinkled in. My wife actually graduated from Shenandoah University which is a fairly well known conservatory but she majored in English! Crazy thing that happened down there. Bruce I guess the combo would actually read policeman/guitar tech/music student (primary job consumes most of my time, saving the luthier title until I build a fewe more, and I play AT the guitar more than I play it! ) I would love to spend more time playing but I seem to get involved in more building and repairing for some reason

Very nice Kahle! I especially like the OM. What is the 5th fret inlay?

Did you carve the top on the LP? It's hard to tell from the photo. If so, how did you go about it, this being your first in that style? Is the whole body a solid block of Mahogany (pretty wood, BTW)?

Those are a coupla great looking guitars.  You are in the right place, judging from the level of your instruments and the others I've seen on this forum.

Carlton - fifth fret inlay is a cocktail glass within a circle. The guy who commissioned the guitar plays under the moniker of "Booze Monkey" and the cocktail glass thing is kind of a trademark symbol type thing for him so I inlaid it in the board for him. He thoroughly dug that. The LP is a flat top (albeit modified) "special" style. Two piece mahogany blank. We shaped the top of the body to a 4.5 degree angle from the top edge to the top edge of the neck pickup and fit the cheeks of the neck joint to that for the correct neck angle so the fretboard actually lays flat to the body of the special rather than rising up from a truly flat body. We have been working on a way to cut these without the tedious fitting of the neck. We have a jig in process and will post it here when it is worked out completely!! I do plan on building a carved top for myself at some point soon as I don't own a carved top electric. I plan to do it with a multicarver (Lorraine machinery) that I have purchased but not yet used.
