Big splash on this guy. Yes the new owner is actually a beer brewer, hence the nickname... :o)


There should be more to post this week hopefully. They seem to take more time fore some reason each time I do one. They are also ALL marine life , the last four in a row!
Sorry about the horrible image. I need to touch it up a bit (the inlay- NOT the photo!!) and take another in better lighting. I polish out with micromesh so the glare on these things is hard to focus on- even manually.

I am still awaiting his response on it Brad. Glad you like it! I am pretty sue he will. It still needs some more work, I just felt like I haven't put anything up in a while.. Everything lately is pretty detailed. I will get to cut out a name this week. That should be a break!

Excellant as always Craig! You sure do a lot of marine life.I was wondering...Do you do much fishing down there in south Fl.?? Or no time for it? I love it up here in the Gulf. Beautiful Mahi Mahi and the water looks awesome too.

Very creative. You really capture the active look.

I used to fish all the time growing up, but then realized I really just had a strong curiosity to what was down there. Now I get my fix diving and doing underwater photography. Don't get me wrong. I eat fish, and love it, but I try to balance things out. I used to keep fish professionally at a museum.
It's amzing to see that they have pretty strong personalities, and seem to be able to learn individuals.
No data here, just strong intuition..

More fish inlay soon! I do get a of marine art pieces. I try to keep it that way . There are a lot of inlayers out there. I want to specialize.

Could you do a pub with a serving girl toting 4 mugs of beer splashing all over the place? Lots of cigarrette smoke and card playing. Maybe a guy pulling a knife. I'm trying to get some inspiration for a bluesy guitar.

cool and challenging. I can think of a lot of other ideas for blues besides a bar though. Go with the mood more than literalism..

is there a more prosaic name for that fish than mahi mahi?

Dolphin fish.

Or in this case dorado dolphin as it's a bull male.
The reason most everyone uses mahi mahi though is in Fl eating dolphin sounds like your eating flipper. The tourists don't get it

that is what my remant of a memory was telling me. as to the use of mahi mahi, it is much wider than in just fl. when i got back over here i was totally unfamiliar with the name, but liked the good eating, whilst being totally ignorant of what it was. then i saw your, as always, remarkable inlay.

i guess the average tourist wouldn't know the difference between a fish and a mammal. is mahi mahi a make up or did it have a biological or historical basis?

BTW, Mahi Mahi is the Hawaiian word for dolfin fish. It's usage seems to have become quite common now though.

Most likely driven into use by the food and marketing restaurant people.

Many common fisherman made names of fish sound really un-appetizing; for instance- orange roughy is called slimehead by the locals. You'll never be able to sell it under that name- but "Orange Roughy" sounds cool.
Same for mahi/Dolphin- King clip I am sure is not grouper, and a host of other names are changed to sound more edible and exciting to the consumer.

That inlay is really appealing. You've done an expert job of fitting in all that action and detail, without loosing any of it to the tuner holes. Mighty fine!

Another tasty treat from the Lavin aquarium! Always great to see your work Craig!

at the sanding stage with- it's actually turned out to be pretty frustrating, (Does that mean challenging? I forget   ) , because there is this one large fish that spans the entire width of the board as it's passing through and getting the materials to go easily and not risk sanding through is taking up all my time at the moment.
Hopefully pics soon.
