This guitar is finally moving forward.
I've posted pics earlier of the b&s wood, but here's a shot of the rosette installed.
It's a piece of the extra fabulous Taz Tiger Myrtle supplied by Tim Spittle, let into a top of Lutz supplied by Shane. It's bordered inside and out by some pale red ab, which shows up rather dark in the poor light.

Thanks for looking.

Steve

I have some of Tim's awesome Tiger Myrtle as well...so there will be a few of these wood combo's floating around! Although, Steve will REALLY do the wood justice, as long as he doesn't get a package of black paint from Hesh !

Looking forward to this Steve!

Shane

Thanks guys!
No worries, there will be no black paint near this guitar.
And not because I dislike black paint. (That's for you, Hesh. )

I'm a little disappointed in the red ab. I thought that some colorful paua would compete with the myrtle. So I opted for the pale red ab. It was perfect before inlaying. After leveling (slightly) the pink hues turned green/blue/silver. But maybe it will--indeed--not compete too much with the figured wood?

We'll see. Anyway, many thanks for the impetus to keep going.

Steve

I really like your rosette! Looks very good! What width is the ab? Did you cut it yourself or buy it in curved pieces?

Oh, that is really lovely! I am using some red abablone for the first time on a rosette that I'm making now, it won't be as elaborate as yours though. It is a beautiful material, I really like the warm hue in the colors.

Steve,

Lovely rosette - I love the subtlety and "flow" in the tiger-myrtle, especially the light piece at the bottom. Was it bookmatched or cut from one piece? Maybe the ab will show better under finish.

I can see where you were coming from with the red idea, but I'm a sucker for black with that shade/pattern of wood (no need for Hesh's black paint - do your guitars suffer from rust Hesh?) and I think black shell or even black purflings rather than the white you used would be an interesting variation. Lots of guitars still to make and lots of new rosettes

Isn't Shane's Lutz fabulous stuff - great that sitka decided to "marry" and evolve

Looking forward to more pics.

Nice to see your rosette, Steve. The combo looks great.

Is this your first Lutz experience? I'd be interested in how you compare/contrast Lutz at this stage with other top woods you've used over the years.

Thanks for stopping by, fellas! (And you know how I feel about the positive feedback. )

Ok, some answers:

Christian-- The red ab is 1/16" width purchased from Andy DePaul. It was cut to a 4.9-ish radius, neither of which my circles are. It does "bend" a bit, as you can see.

Arnt--me too.

Dave-- yes, the material was bookmatched, and the lightest part oriented toward the join, then kept on the top's centerline. And yes, the Lutz is great stuff.

Lance--thanks!

JJ-- where you been?? But yes, this is my first time working with Lutz. It is of course paler than Sitka, and it's also lighter in weight. It is not quite as stiff as the Sitka I've been using, so it seems to compare--so far--to Engelmann in its properties. However, it's got Engelmann beat in the "looks" department. I'll write more later when I get this baby done.

Alain-- thanks to you as well!

I do appreciate the feedback guys!

Steve

Really nice design, materials and execution, Steve! Haven't seen wood trimmed out so nicely with ab. Subtle and elegant.

Oh, man, I wish I had me some of that tiger myrtle! It looks FANTASTIC in a rosette! Nicely done, Steve.

I'm gonna have to keep my eye out for some of that stuff... I'm thinking rosette, bindings, head plates, the whole kit and kaboodle...

Steve, that looks great. As Hesh wrote, I'm seeing a silver-like effect, too. I like it, and I think you will too, as time goes on. Disappointment is a normal first reaction when something doesn't turn out as planned. I think it'll look superb if you are planning some toner in the top finish.

So, what kind of top wood will you be using?

Looking good Steve.

I'm keen to see what you think of the Myrtle tonally.

I just bought a couple of planks of "un-tigered" myrtle.

Here's a very dodgy pic. (the spots are MDF I was flinging around the shed )

Having grown up in Tassie, Myrtle was generally used for parquetry dance floors and high quality kitchens.

Cheers

looks really great Bro. I am anxious to see how it all comes together. Have you picked out a binding yet? I am assuming the box wood is the same as the rosette.

Thanks again, guys!

Pat, I'm going to guess that morning tes is no better for one's computer than morning coffee is.    Not a good idea.

Mike, THANK UUUUU!

Todd & Bro, Yup. This Taz TigMyrtle guitar gets not only the Taz rosette, but also a Taz headplate, bindings, butt wedge and back inlay. And, I'm sure, a Taz heel cap. This sounds like I'm stuck in a rut, and I could be, but this wood is so beautiful.

Carlton, No top toner. However, the red ab will be used for purfling top and back. And why not? Since this thing is over the top already, might as well keep going. And if it ends up looking like a Faberge egg, well, maybe someone will want to steal it?

Bob, your board is beautiful. Will that be guitars someday?

I appreciate your kindness guys! Plus, you've made me feel better about that red ab.

Steve

Morning "tes"? Sorry Pat, I meant to say morning rea.

No wait, morning ted.

Oh, you know...

What I like about the combination of the pale red ab and the tiger myrtle is that the shell doesn't overpower the myrtle. The myrtle will darken under finish quite a bit, and the shell will pop a bit more. The two will not fight for attention, and the overall look is going to be (and is) classy.
Nice work...as usual.
