Noob question while doing some fun work on an old cheap guitar.  Curious about the neck wood.  Maple perhaps ?

:))  - not going to plane it and add to the salad, but as for smell, it has a light very discreet...woody smell, which I can't really describe. Oak, that smells stronger and ..sour to me :D

Looks too porous for maple.  Could it be Spanish Ceder?  It also looks a little like Ash, but I'm just guessing.  Is it light or heavy, so to speak?

It has a small pore here and there but certainly not a porous wood. Probably maple since this factory mainly concentrates on violins rather than guitars.

Color is very light, bit pinkish, actually looks a very lot like some Engelmann I have here :)  The neck doesn't feel heavy but hard to tell for sure with a guitar attached to it.

If it was Spanish cedar you'd know. It smells sweet but tastes incredibly bitter and unless you were in a containment suit when you sanded you'd know

It could be Sycamore (European that is - what the Americans call Sycamore we call London Plane) which is a form of maple.

It looks like it is soft maple, birch, or alder. These are the most common woods that were used in factory guitars producing less expensive consumer guitars.

I vote western (bigleaf) maple. Birch typically has a bit softer transition between the grain lines, I say "typically". Alder has these radial flecks that give it away and I don't see any of them on that guitar. Yup I would wager maple!

Though, judging from the slight pink hue, I believe it’s maple.

    the pics make this very difficult as there seems to be a pinkish hue on this. There are so many woods that this can look like. Can you tell us the origin of this instrument?
      It is too pink for maple and has some appearance of cherry , which was a popular neck wood many years ago. Also poplar ( tulip ) can have some hueing but that often goes away over time.
