I was wondering what users of the luthiertool binding jig (or similiar, Arnt Rians for example) thought about using it on a Wedge guitar.  Do you think it would work as well as it does on a standard tapered body?  Thanks for your replies.

Any binding jig that indexes off of the side of the guitar should work OK for a wedge guitar. You might have to mess with the bit height to get the right depth of channel but the difference between the thin side and the thick side of the wedge shouldn't be all that much.

One of the binding issues with a wedge is the bending the binding strip. The curve of the strip is pretty complex so simply throwing the binding on the bender won't quite do it. You'll have to touch it up on a pipe or, do what I do, and use plastic binding.

Hesh, I've done some handheld cutting of channels and do not use a holder when doing it. Just a carpet on top of my bench. That W/F setup really looks great though. Everyone raves about it who've tried other methods.

Thanks for the welcome Bruce.  I've been lurking for a little while here.  I hang out alot at MIMF, but am really starting to like this place after hanging out and learning how to use it!  I am not a professional builder but I love making instruments!  Octave mandolins and guitars.  I have been wrestling with binding too long.  Can't seem to decide what type of jig  I want to make, Williams, Lmi, Luthiertool.  All have advantages and disadvantages. 

Thanks for the binding heads-up Mike.  I hadn't really thought about that before.  Makes perfect sense though.  Hesh, I would only be losing about 3/4" on my bass side width (OM size) so it shouldn't be an issue, but thanks for lookin' out for me!

Hesh is right, the guitar really needs to be supported well for the luthiertool jig. It's easy enough, though, to clamp one side of the guitar and rout the other, then turn it around and clamp on the other side.

Seems like Mike is correct about the bending the binding. I would want to bend the binding in two axes instead of just one like we ususally do.

I use a jig modelled after Arnt's (with two bearings) with a vise of sorts from Sylvan Wells' web site. In case anyone's wondering, the plates were routed flush before routing the rabbets for the binding.
