I was wondering, how many of you make your kerfed lining strips? I made and use the little apparatus that Frank Ford has on his site. Does anyone else use it?

I do, because with shipping and all, it's just as easy to, and I don't build enough per year not to. I 'simply' thickness them with a router thicknessing setup, and cut the kerfs with a japanese handsaw, given my lack of power saws appropriate for the task.

I cut my own. Don't know what F. Ford uses. I have a sled I made for my band saw. I can tape two pieces of lining together ( Stacked on top of each other), and put them on this sled..and the kerf of the band saw does the rest. I then tilt the band saw blade to 15 degrees..or so...and remove a wedge from the face of the kerfing.
After I rip the stock on the table saw, and thickness in the sander...in an hour I can have 1 years worth of kerfing.

Count me in too for a bulk buy from Mark Kett, if you decide to do it. His kerfing strips are great, but the shipping... ! My first $40 order from guitarjigs came UPS ground the other day, and the shipping charge was about $18 for a lightweight box to IL. Plus a 'foreign transaction fee' on the visa bumped it up another couple bucks.

Maybe Canada Post would have have better rates, will try it that way on the next order from Mark. Yeah, I'm cheap. buddy lee38496.4380787037

I would be in on a group order also. But, when I ordered from Mark a few months ago, and got about 30 strips from him, he said he was back ordered for about 4 months! So, not sure how soon he could put an order together. That's what happens when you have a superior product at a great price!

i get stuff from canada regularly, at least once a month, and canada post rates are good(exchange rate helps) and they are generally rather quick. certainly cheaper than ups and just as fast in my experience.

Lance...I'm in on the group buy if it's reverse cedar liners.

Anyone ever get further word on the Taylor kerfing clamps? Are they metal or plastic after all? I thought about the LMI wood ones, but would rather have the ones glue won't stick to!

D.L., Oops, things got detoured a bit. Getting back to the Frank Ford kerfing strip bandsaw jig... I don't have one but intend to build it 'someday'. It looks like a good jig to use for someone who doesn't build a whole lot of guitars per year, and I'd rather be able to quickly make a few kerfing strips when they're needed than wait (and pay) for shipping on the store-bought ones.

Does yours work well? Do the kerfs come out looking good, with even spacing between the slots?

I just bought a set from Taylor.
They are metal, cast aluminum.
The set I bought has two sizes, more than enough to do a complete top or bottom, maybe both. A little pricey, $162.50. I think they are worth it though. They are cast to have full contact with the kerfing strip when clamped; much better that anything else I have tried.

I bought them directly from Taylor.
The set is 132 clamps. I will attempt to attach picture here. About 30 of the clamps are 1/2 thickness and the remainder are the thicker. One side of the clamp is triangular and the other side is flat, so just has to be reversed for both types of kerfing. I think they are great. Tom Harbin

What I was trying to say is; when using regular triangular kerfing, put the triangular side of the clamp over the kerfing and the flat side on the outside of the rim. When using reverse kerfing, put the flat side over the kerfing and the triangular side of the clamp on the outside of the rim. They are really nice. The pressure is firm, but not excessive so that they don't dent the outside of the side when using the reverse kerfing. I might also mention that when I ordered mine, about 3 weeks ago, the sales rep at Taylor said he was surprised that they were still selling them.    If this is not clear, let me know and I will snap a few photos with them in place.
