Here's a few more shots of this particular guitar.
First up, let me apologize for the lousy photography.
As you know, it's quite difficult to photograph a dark, shiny object. And I was hurrying to get these taken.
So....

Ok, #1--An overall view of the front:





#2--A closer view of the rosette:





#3--A shot of the heel cap, back inlay (paua) and some of the neck:






#4--The heel itself (bad shot, sorry!)





Finally, #5--The peghead-- bookmatched Blackwood, w/ black pearl in the sap area, and gold pearl in the black zones:





If you look closely, you can see the purfling on the body is Purpleheart and Holly. (Purple is the customer's favorite color. I thought one line wouldn't be too much.    )

Oh yes, the binding, heel cap, rosette and neck lam are Koa. The bridge is African Blackwood. It is a superior material for bridges!

Wooweee! that's pretty, Steve. It is all beautiful and I really love the head plate. Do you have a fret in your nut?   Maybe it's just my monitor.

Can you please explain it?

It looks like a fret or purfling or something....

What makes you say this? I am curious as I have not worked with African Blackwood.

That is very nice bro. The headstock is a knockout. I love the rosette with only a black line boardering the pearl. Excellent! The use of black lines in the neck around the koa laminate also excellent. real purty.
Makes me want to get down to the shop right now.

Steve, where are you? I too am anxious to know what is going on with the nut.
Oh, yes, there's a guitar built around the nut too. Yes, it's quite stunning. great work. Little things like using a sapwood tr cover are what polish it for me. Great work.
Now, about that nut...

OK, guys! About that NUT....

But first let me thank you for your more than kind words. As you know, there is so much effort going into *just one project* that a shower of appreciation from one's peers is something almost necessary.
AND, you all do it so well!   

Ok, the nut: this guitar is the second one for this customer, and since I had done this on his first guitar, it made sense to continue it...a theme of sorts.
Anyway, it's really simple, it's just Holly veneer sandwiched between BRW veneers (dark/light/dark) and then glued inbetwixt outer layers of white Corian. The whole sandwich is only 1/4" thick, and held together with epoxy. Next time, I'm gonna use bone saddle blanks as the outermost layers, just for the hardness.

Steve, That's a great looking guitar. I can see you just scribblin' notes on paper with all the plans you made before the build.

This sort of art only happens with great planning. Think Howard's Dovetail madness.

Anyway, we are used to being wowed by you, keep it up and thanks for raising the bar for all of us. You are truly an inspiring builder, plus an all-around nice guy.

I really like the shape - what body style is that again,.. is it original? Very nice attention to detail as well - and a beautiful scheme of color, the different woods in play!

A couple more answers:

JJ-the sound... hmmm, I'll admit to trouble with such descriptions. But let me take a stab at it: 1st of course, it sounds "new". A little tight in the bass, but that's just the spruce trying to wake up. It has a very rich *whoomph* to the sound that Al Carruth could probably explain. This IS my largest guitar, so the air cavity is more than ample to give that aforementioned whoomph I like so well. Other than that, I am hearing the rosewood zing that you can--quite honestly--get off of East Indian.

Lex- I like the A. Blackwood for bridges cuz 1) It's black, like ebony, so fits in to that design scheme, but 2) it isn't "dead" like ebony. It has its own glassy tap which can only help the sound. Sure it's heavy, but so is ebony, and I'm sure lots of it will come in lighter than ebony.

Bruce- You are being too kind, my friend. Especially putting me up there with Howard!

Charliewood- Yes, that's my SJ shape. It is an original. It's a full 16" across, with a tighter waste than a dread, but the full dread depth. I could probably get more Cheerios in this than in a standard dread. (You know, the accepted test for air volume.)
