Michael Nailed it.  Instruction from a competent professional will take care of most technique issues except for the practicing part.  I think that's where a lot of people fall short.  I know I do.  Practicing good technique develops the correct muscles to play with ease, and weakness in those muscles is sometimes the source of poor chords or buzzing or muted notes.
