Well folks, I just returned from the ASIA Symposium. It was absolutly fantastic. I got to meet some more OLFers and rub shoulders with master builders. Anthony Z should be coming along with a whole "mess" of pics. Anyway I just wanted to show off where some of my hard earned pay went. Enjoy

What an awesome time! Anyway Matt went nuts the second he arrived and bought all that wood.The rest of the Symposium was more of an intervention for him! Anyway everyone is invited for that pastrami so come on over! More about ASIA to come i am sure.

Unfortunately there wasn't a whole lot of tips and techniques, I think having to fly there prevented most from bringing jigs, and demos. That being said...

Kenny Hill gave a fantatstic presentation on double tops. He walked us through the process and development of his double top design.

Al Carruth gave an awesome class on his acoustic research, the man is a genius! One of the most interesting things I found was his research on compression waves in strings, it's not something we normally think about. I will say I think he lost 90% of the class when he started talking about fourier transforms, but he brought everything back around into layman terms.

Ervin Somogyi(?) discussed his research on flatsawn bracing, stating that if the wood is low density flatsawn wood is 10% stiffer

I missed most of Kevin Ryan's presentation, so hopefully someone who attended it will chime in.

CNC- the one topic that came up in almost every event was CNC; either praising it or puting it down. one thing is clear, it is, and will be, a powerful force in lutherie!

Matt! I knew you were buying some wood, but I had no idea you scored that big. Really nice looking stuff.

I too would be glad to share some of the Asia experience and will soon, However I'm still trying to decompress, debrief, and catch up on sleep. I can tell you that it is a very intense 5 days(and nights!) And, anyone who's never gone should definitely make plans for 2009.

I'm not sure how Evan survived. Missouri is the center of the universe for comfort food (think biscuits and gravy)...There weren't no pastrami for lunch!

Well Katz's is the best for corned beef but Carnegie has a tad more ambience, but I digress. Bob glad you got back ok.
Bob Long is neglecting to mention he built the guitar everyone was talking about at the show. He submitted it to Kevin Ryan, Brian Gallop and Charlie Hoffman during an evaluation class and they were totally blown away. Neil Harrell and Julius Borges played it too. I was just waiting for someone to drop it so I could fix it.

Over all, it was a small turn out for a symposium, but the quality of the attendees more than made up for it.

I met many of our fellow OLF'ers,(sounds dirty ),

but didn't share a single beer with any of them

Yo dudes glad to see you made it back safe and sound. Upon my release from the Betty Ford Clinic I'll post a pile of pics plus my take on ASIA.

One of the biggest problems was that the name tags were on a lanyard and the names seemed to want to flip over. I met a lot of guys and have no idea who they are.

This ASIA symposium was much smaller than the other two that I've been to. That turned out to be a plus since everybody got to talk to everybody they wished to. Heck, the trip would have been worth it even if they hadn't had the official presentations.

Bob Long's guitar was as nice as I've seen in a long time.

There was some beautiful wood at the Symposium. I bought a little bit of wood from the estate sale table, but I couldn't bring myself to buy more. I need to turn the wood I have already into guitars before I buy more (too much repair work and not enough time!). Bob Long's guitar was fantastic. I enjoyed seeing and playing it.

This symposium was smaller than the three previous I've attended, but I think that was to the benefit of the people who were there. I also liked the fact that all of our time wasn't scheduled for us. That gave us time to sit around and talk to some of the best builders and repairers in the country. I think I talked to more people at this symposium than I have at any other one I’ve attended, and as a result, it was a great experience for me.

By the way, Evan is that good looking in person too!
