I think that first one could be Butternut. I have a piece here and this is a closeup. Whaddaya think? Pretty close match?

Also, I think the second one is Beech.

John, we are talking the UK here, the likelihood of it being butternut is as near as makes no difference zero, I have never seen butternut here at any of the wood suppliers, no one lists it on their inventories. I've only ever seen one growing here that is at Kew Gardens.

The first one is European cherry, P. avens, but I agree with you on the second being Common beech, Fagus sylvatica.

yeah, it looks a lot like beech with those little brown flecks, but the purple bruises threw me....

I am aware that beech is used for some classical guitars...but it's not really that nice...

You'll prolly get some decent necks out of it though!!

The best way of identifying the wood is to try and figure out the standard woods that the shopfitting company uses. Then it should be a process of elimination.
