I bought the hook & loop kit from Grizzly the other day and installed it on my Ryobi drum sander. It makes for an easy installation so I was hoping to be able to change grits as I'm sanding tops and back sets for a smoother finish. Well the problem I ran into is that it made the drum just big enough that now the drum touches the wood before the hold down rollers do. Just barely but unless I apply pressure by hand to hold the wood against the feed belt it gets stuck and just sands in the one spot (not a good thing. Anybody else ran into this? I'm going to disassemble the thing enough to see if I can make an adjustment to the hold downs.John How38364.7328356481

John, I'm not familiar with the Ryobi sander but most have a way to adjust the pressure rollers. There should be a phillips head screw that adjusts tension (it will have a spring on the barrel) and a set screw that actually lowers the roller. If you don't have the ability to adjust them, well, then I'm stumped. Good luck Paul

   I had similar problems on my performax, but was able to adjust the pressure rollers some. Right now my infeed belt is so slick that it really does not make much difference.
I did find that sandpaper lasts a lot longer than it did when backed by the metal of a bare roller, and that in itself is worth the trouble.

I have a Ryobi too. It is almost identical to the Performax

John I did the same thing to my ryobi when I had it. You can adjust the rollers some. Another thing that helped with the feed was to use a carrier board with 100 grit PSA paper attached to the bottom side of the board. No more slipping.

What chance do the rest of us have?

I have never been to Healdsburg but would like to go. Perhaps just to have a look and see what is happening on the left coast. I actually was thinking of the ASIA convention close to Baltimore. (MUCH CLOSER to me)

if I can find the adjustment. I really like the hook and loop setup and John is right. The paper does seem to hold up much better. I haven't tried any really resinous woods yet but I do have some Coco (waiting for my new dust mask's) to do one of these days.

I have the basement blocked up, subfloor above the workshop is on, logs are stacked to the 8th course and the rain has set in. Anyway, the plan is to be in summer after this one coming. At least that's the plan. My experience is that these things always take longer than planned

Woodsy and comfy, sounds like the perfect spot for a luthier convention. I loved North Carolina, felt right at home with all the rolling hills and trees, passed through south of Gerald Sheppard, over the Smokies, had breakfast with the Cherokees in Cherokee, NC, 1991.

My family roots trace back to Orange County North Carolina. Congrats John, you are having this contracted I presume? Kind of hard to build in NC and live in GA.

I have thought for some time that a luthier organization similar to what Steve has in Texas (LINT) for the southeaster bretheren would be a good thing. Or maybe just a general convention for all. The Asheville area is fantastic. Paris of the south is their motto
