Hesh my friend, you will be missed. I'm glad on several levels that an apology was made, but there is absolutely no requiement on your part (or any others) to accept said apology.

Words fail me at this point. Take good care.

-Jim

Hesh,

If you feel the need to leave the OLF then I can respect your decision. If you choose to return at a later date, then you'll be welcomed with open arms. Either way, take my best wishes with you. You're a stand-up, top-notch bloke. If you're ever in Newcastle (and we still haven't been washed away) then drop by for one of my Special Reserve Home Brews. I'll miss your sense of humour and your truly excellent tutorials (which by he way I think would form the basis of an excellent guitar building website, if you were so inclined).
Does this make sense?
No, it does not.

You talk about being a victim.....Just what were you a victim of? Someone said something you did not like.

To compare yourself to a woman who is a rape victim is reprehensible. You were offended by a word. How does that equate to being the victim of a violent crime?

This whole thing is just ridiculous.

Jim

Well Hesh,

From the moment you made it known that you preferred no more comment on the matter I have stayed away from the subject out of respect for your desire to move on and allow this matter to bury itself into the archives.

However, this is a development which forces further comment because it would be sad for all to see the baby go out the window with the suds over a point of pride. I consider you to be a good mate of mine Hesh, and I want to remind you that with the handicap of distance restricting any closer contact, this forum has been the only way by which we have maintained regular contact.

So, whilst I certainly can and do understand the strength of emotion attached to this issue, I would ask that you consider the situation for a while before you go spitting the pacifier.

For a start, I think you should consider that this situation was triggered by the use of an offensive and inappropriate word. A word that most of us here at the OLF without Jewish heritage had never even heard of before this event showered it with so much light. Whilst I certainly can and do understand the strength of emotion attached to this word, especially for yourself, I think that you should also perhaps consider that this kind of racial slur, by your very own words, was an unfortunate first here at the OLF.

So my point here Hesh is that it should be kept in mind that this offensive term was used by only one person and, upon a clearer understanding of it's impact by the rest of us, was immediately acknowledged by one and all as offensive and inappropriate at the OLF.

As for people not respecting your wishes to just drop this subject and continuing to pressure you to accept the apology, well I guess they just did not understand the depth of cut. However I am sure their intentions were good and that they were just after what they perceived to be the best outcome, maybe they can leave well enough alone now?

So with that said, may I suggest as your friend that you take a short break from here, maybe a week or two and consider your position more carefully rather than pulling the pin in the heat of the moment. In doing so, maybe you will see things differently and we can avoid letting pride deprive this group of one of it's most valued and effective members. However, as I have said earlier, I shall respect your decision to leave if this is your wish.

For the rest of us the OLF shall remain a great place, but the fact is that crap will continue to happen. However I think with a little more effort to maintain our focus upon the benefits that this community provides to us as guitar builders, and a little less focused on the crap that pops up now and then, we would all benefit a great deal.

Peace all

Kim

Hesh,

I will be sad to see you go. You have been a positive influence on me and countless others with your support and personality. Your ability to share what you have learned has always been well thought out, humorous, and genuinely appreciated by all the members.
I honor you for standing on your principals and doing what you feel is correct as a man should. You were correct to rebuke the culprit over what was said. This type of behavior is unwanted and uncalled for by anyone. It was your responsibility to say something and you did your duty.

I must remind you that this is a public forum with participants from around the world all with different views, experiences, racial backgrounds, genders, and religions. However, we all share this one point where our lives come together and share our knowledge and love of building instruments. That’s what makes this place great. No forum can be perfect because people are not perfect. But in the end the sharing for the common good outweighs the problems that can occur by poorly thought out humor or downright attacks. These behaviors can not and should not be tolerated. But I urge you to reconsider you decision to leave the forum. You are an important member here and it would be a loss to us all if you were no longer able to share your wisdom with us. Please do not let the red of anger blind your eyes from seeing successes and your friends.

With sadness

Philip

Hesh,
I don't know you, but I have read a lot of your posts. The many pleasant, talented, and generous members like you make this forum an amazing place. It seems as though you enjoy the forum as much as the forum enjoys you. I hope your choice to leave is made with a clear head (this is my hope; I am not questioning the decision you make).

I read the topic in the archive. To be honest I would have never even noticed (had no clue what it meant). I suspect the kind of coward that would have used the word in the context you took it as. Would have denied it was anything other than a typo (again "coward"). You can never be sure, but that is what I make of it.

One thing that really bothers me is that I did not know what the word meant. It is very important that we never forget, and in pointing out what the word had described. You have refreshed my memory. For that I thank you.

Whatever your decision ends up being, don’t punish yourself. Life is not a trial run, you only get one go round and you should live it as best you can.

Peace and best of luck whatever you choose.
Rich

Hesh -
you're an admirable man ...

with as much integrity as a 1920's 12 fret dreadnaught
honest as a quartersawn mahogany neck with 2-way adjustable truss rod
more intonation than an adirondack spruce top with scalloped struts
and a Clarence White sound hole

it takes a big man to make a giant step

let's take your advice and 'build 'em straight and true'

I say we end this here and now and get back to our regularly scheduled programming. I'm glad your sticking around Hesh and my PM regarding debauchery in the North East stands.

Onto more guitar building now....

Louis

That's what I was expecting from a stand-up guy like you, Hesh!  Not the apology thing, but the stay and keep your life aligned thing.  Although the apology thing is going the extra mile.

glad you're stayin' Hesh, You'd be missed.

a LOT

I missed the trouble, but as someone who grew up in a divided society (Northern Ireland) where name calling was a major issue, I understand the pain.

Shalom

Hesh,
Forgiveness is great but some actions do not deserve acceptance of appologies. Hatred related to race, sex, religion or national origin are actions that rarely deserve an acceptance of an appology.
Hesh,in my opinion, appologies mean little or nothing when related to religious or race hate. You have Hutzpath sp.

Although I believe Hesh, as well as all our Jewish community members, have the right to be offended by malicious use of language, from what I've seen here, that really wasn't the case. From my vantage point, Michael simply made a bad judgment call. I don't believe his intent was evil, it just hit a very sensitive nerve, and for this he has been thoroughly persecuted. I hope I can make it through the day without saying something someone doesn't like. Actually, I'm sure this post will offend someone.

I really hesitate to step in here and make any comment at all. But If it would be OK with everybody, I'd like to put this entire topic to rest. Ill leave it open, I am really just asking this as a favor.

Thanks!
