I'm building an OLF SJ with some Granadillo from Hibdon. Here are some progress pics, along with a few comments.

First, some thoughts on Granadillo. I think it's a great looking wood, and it bends like a dream. Sounds nice to tap so far. Very stiff and strong. But here's the negative. It's a nightmare to sand. It's the most difficult wood I've ever run through the drum sander (including Cocobolo), and I burned through two strips of 60 grit on the drum sander just on the sides (I pushed it too hard.) I still need to thickness the back, and I'm not looking forward to that part. It's also very splintery, so be careful with your fingers. Overall, I like the wood a lot, but I wish it were easier on the sandpaper. That's not a huge knock on a wood that, in all other ways, seems great so far.

Here's how it looks so far (the back is joined but not thicknessed, braced or attached).

This is my first attempt at an armrest. Although my motivation/inspiration is thanks to Tony's recent tutorial, I have modified his approach and some others I have seen in order to tackle all this in a slightly different way, which will be more apparent when the armrest is complete.

Here's some shots of the armrest progress, which I hope will give some ideas to those thinking about tackling an armrest.

Very nice work, your granadillo set looks very similar to mine.

I had a hard time sanding it as well. It got a lot better if I used the belt cleaner after every other pass or so. I was using 60 grit and went through 2 or 3 wraps on my 10-20.

I definately agree with the sanding of this stuff.  Mine had a lot of deep machine marks (I got mine through LMI)  that needed sanding out and I swear, this stuff is immune to sandpaper and scrapers.  I also agree on the splinters.  I had one in my thumb that took a couple of days to work itself out.  On the plus side, I got a great workout and that is something I definately need!

Looks great!  Keep posting pictures.

Nice work so far, Kelby. I'm looking forward to more.

BTW guys, concerning initial thicknessing--hand planes! Don't need no stinkin' 'lectricity!
