I was checking out the woodcraft catalogue,and I began to wonder what would be wrong with a couple of alternative finishes they sell.For example Behlen`s Woodturner`s Finish,Hut Crystal Coat,or possibly,Mirror Coat.The crystal coat seems like it would be the easiest to apply.Anyone have any thoughts about any of these products.

Unless they have plasticizers in them to allow for heat, humidity, and vibration, you are going to end up with a finish that is cracked or crazed in the long run.

Mirror Coat is not suitable for guitars. Its a hard Epoxie but its too thick and dampening. Besides, it cannot be buffed or worked on like regular finishes.

Many wood finishes do meet the requirements needed for a good guitar finish - thin, light, flexible, durable, etc. The typical wood bowl or table doesn't need to vibrate clearly while it also protects againts bumps and sweat....

I was wondering about spray laquer or acrylics at Lowes or Home depot? I think they carry Deft and some Hellman--why would these not be good?

Deft is actually a nitro product, but it has thickeners and flow smoothing stuff in it that allows it to level out when brushing.  I would think it goes on too thick for musical instruments.  It is great for furniture, but the fumes issue is definately there.  It also has something in it to slow the drying.  I have used it a lot on things I have made, but wouldn't put it on an acoustic guitar.  Maybe an electric.  I don;t know about acrylic products.
