Dave's away in Wales for a month so I've got the run of the shed(and the contents of Le Fridge)

I spent yesterday binding this OM and got some Zpoxy on it today.

It's Tasmanian Myrtle with Blackwood bindings. Same tree as the Tiger Myrtle (Nothofagus Cunninghammi) without the spalting.

It's quite a delicate pink hue and the bindings seem to complement it quite nicely.

The camera flash tends to redden it up a bit so the first and last pics are more indicative.

It's very nice wood to work with, doesn't need pore filling. They only reason I Z-poxy'd this one was to pop the grain and the blackwood bindings needed filling anyway.

I have a question, where did you get Blackwood binding material.  I can't seem to find it and would like to use it on my current build.  TIA

Never mind.  I just noticed you are in Aus. so I am guessing you got it through Australian Tonewoods.  Anyone know where I can get it in the US to save on shipping?

That was my honest and vocal reaction to seeing that guitar body....THE SHEEN!!! You've got the wood comination just right.

Absolutely stunning. Am I right in saying that the guitars posted on this forum get more and more beautiful??

Yes Hesh that is a LP. Dave has house sitters while he is away so he bought all of his instrumets to the shed.

I had it out scaring the neighbours.

Sam, we buy this stuff from the local lumber yard. Just sift through it 'til we find some quartersawn. So it ends up costing about $25AUD a set - about 10 quid in your currency.

I don't know of anyone here in Australia that sells it as tonewood. (Tim may have some but I've only seen him advertise the Tiger variety)

I'm going to try and find some to make a neck for this guitar so if I come across any decently quartered stuff I'll send you some. (if you don't mind waiting for surface mail)

It'll probably take until Christmas to get there by the time I source it, re-saw it and mail so you can have it a Christmas present.

Once Strung, please let us know how it sounds. I love to hear what you think it compares to. I have heard that Myrtle sounds like Maple??????

The first thing that strikes me is the gold purflings along the binding. What did you do to get that gold colored purfling???

Man oh man I could think of some good uses for that if I could get my hands on it !!

I just saw a Peter Coombe mandolin with back, sides, and neck made out of Tasmanian myrtle, and it was very nice. The wood looked a lot like cherry.

Now you mention cherry...you are absolutely right. I carve cherry a lot and should have noticed this..

...I THOUGHT that Tassie Myrtle looked familiar!

Ken - sorry but the purfs are garden variety thick B/W/B from LMI. Must be the camera playing tricks.

Rick - Peter Coombe has some nice things to say about Tas Myrtle in conjunction with King William soundboards for his mandos.

Sam - it's hard to describe but the Myrtle has a little more purple in it that Cherry.

David - if you don't have any luck with the Blackwod bindings in the States you can get them from Tim Spittle
or from Australian Luthiers Supplies. We make our own.

I really like it Bob . Waaaaaay Cool ! Wish I had your lumber yard close to me .
I don't know why suppliers do not stock Myrtle (other than Tiger ) . It's my favorite wood, and works beautifully . Man , at that price I'd have heaps of sets.
This guitar is going to be a stunner Bob ,and I'll bet my bottom dollar it's going to sound great too.
Just you and L.F left there in the workshop Huh ? Better restock before Dave gets back !

Tas Myrtle at Australian Tonewoods


I have some particularly well figured sets of Flamed Tas Myrtle. Parts of the stock are two large boards which will be resawn soon. So if you need neck material let me know.
These sets are not listed on my site so a PM or an email will do.
