I only wanted some strings, couldn't get out of there fast enough. Did I mention duelling screaming guitars?

Are we lucky here in Spokane, or are they all like this?

The Little Rock Guitar Center has a separate room for all the acoustics, yep, soundproof.

You go in the huge room and really cannot hear what's happening in the main store.

They also have a drum room, with a door which closes automatically after you enter.

I'm aghast that the high dollar guitars are not well cared for in the store. Dirt, fingerprints, old strings, and yes damaged guitars that were completely unsaleable.

There was a new upper line guitar that had died an untimely death from lack of humidity. I forget the brand but it was advertised in Acoustic Guitar. No doubt they forgot to cook the spruce. It was from shrinking spruce, time for a new top.

They had a bunch of Breedloves in there too, most with the JLD Bridge Doctor. (I had to think of all our collective threads regarding brace shaving and bridge weight)

Yawn.... Time to get in the shop and build build build....

Oh, and yeah, if you want to buy a set of M150's you have to listen to two or three screaming guitars.

I agree, I went there (30 min drive)to get the John Pearse Resonator strings they said they had and to check it out for the first time. I was greeted with pa speakers blaring in the entrance, 1/2 dozen cranked Marshalls,no John Pearse Reso strings,and a salesman with his peacock hair-do(n't).All was not lost though,I got to go back the next day to return a $9.99 guitar stand speacial that was missing the neckrest from the box.But they also had alot of cool stuff and I did spend time in the soundproff acoustic room.I have since went back and had a better time.

I can just hear someone who's left my shop. That Dickey guy never cleans his shop. I could hardly breathe in there. (I wear a dust mask).

Could you believe all the piles of unorganized woods? (cutoffs from resawing, too good to throw away)

And look at all the unfinished guitars, and nothing at all to play? I don't understand that. (When they are finished, they are gone.)

And, why isn't he working on my custom guitar? It seems he's too busy to work? (oh my ears are burning now)

I too have some fun at guitar centers and rarely go to Little Rock without attendance. Happy 4th Everyone!

Too funny. The one here in Frenso is like that too, but I go in during the
non-peak times. Afternoon, friday night, times like that.

I have a friend who works there and regularly gets me great prices on
things. I bought a Boss delay for less than they sell for used, and last
friday he gave me a $270 Celelstion speaker at cost.

They let me take measurements and pictures of unique guitars (like a '62
Jazzmaster) and go to some decent effert to let me try different guitars
with different amps in the quiet room knowing I'm just tinkering.

They certainly all can be like that. The closest GC to us is in Canton, MI and I'll go over on a weekday morning if I have the day off -- not too bad then.

The GC near me has a seperate room for acoustics, with a sliding glass door to kill the noise from the electric section. Within that area is another room with a door seperating it from the other acoustic room, with all the higher-end stuff, that is, Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Larivee, and <cough> Tacoma. There is also a humidifier in this room, and they maintain the instruments in there pretty carefully.

well i think its like the mickey d's, some are better than the others. the one here in my city of norfolk is really nice, they wont let people turn up the amp to loud unless your buyin it and you for certainly wont get neglected. the accoustics are in soundproffed rooms. i dont usually go to the GC unless i have time to pick up a guitar and play. three screaming guitars???????? make it four!

We are very lucky here in Cool, Ca. We don't have a GC!!!
Actually there is a brand new one about an hour away but I have yet to stop.

The one I visit near where I grew up has had a beautiful Shelley Park for at least a year. I play it every time I go. They even recently set it up, shimmed the bridge and put some flat woulnd strings on it. It cooks. The Boston one has some of the golden era adi topped Martins too and they have that separate climate controlled room. You can't hear the screamers, but then again, I kind of like them.

I work for a small chain of family-owned music stores, and I have to say it's about the same no matter where you are... especially on the weekends.

Screaming amps, kids on the drums, random bursts of noise from the pro audio department, bad metallica riffs, that kid is on the drums AGAIN, stairway to heaven, a trombone rendition of Old McDonald... the list goes on. Thankfully we do have a soundproofed room for the higher-end acoustics, and another for the larger amps, but the majority of the stuff that gets played with on a regular basis is out on the floor.

Thankfully I spend my time in shipping and recieving, so rarely am I required to venture out amongst the tire-kickers.

We have the equivelent GC-type stores here in the UK, they are usually smaller companies.

All the local music shops around me are full of what you describe...nasty guitars with nasty noises coming out of them. How many high end Taylors can I put up with? There's a whole WELTER of sub $200 guitars and two brands of "high enders", that doesn't appeal to the guitarist's taste at all!!

I went to a large instrument store in Manchester on Monday, with three storeys of nothing but instruments. The top floor (closest to heaven ) were the high end guitars; Lowden, Fylde, Stonebridge...(ah, did I tell you I played a bunch of Lowdens for the first time in five years? I did?...oh sorry!! )

The salesman was keen to place my friend and I at the quiet corner of the store, away from the electric guitar section, and he handed us these $4,000 + guitars one by one...man, it was bliss!!!!

The best I played was the Lowden F35, African Blackwood/spruce. At $5,872, I was rather tempted to sell one of my kids!!! It has to be THE most expensive guitar I have ever held.

I think I'll be avoiding my local trashy guitar stores from now on!!!
