I've found that sanding wood past 220 leads to bad finish adhesion. They found the same over at Santa Cruz Guitars as well.

Thanks Rick, a very timely suggestion! 



Just this morning I'm prepping to spray some Mac ebony, and it still
looks pretty smooth even after hitting it with 320 (coming down from
2000 grit).  So 220 it will be!

Just make sure you've got quality papers (not all 220 is created equal...)
