Is it not possible to tape voicing demo at ASIA? Would love to buy. Found out at last minute cannot attend. If so, can you put mike next to top when tapping so we can hear and understand better.

I was wondering about this as well. I have a friend (ASIA member also) that is going to be out of the country that wants me to tape a little if I can.

I'm bringing my MD player with Mic so I can tape as many demos as possible. I think a offering these on the ASIA website for members only would be a nice perk that has never been done. Or even taping all of the demos and putting them on CD for sale to all members at a discount, and charge more for non-members on their site. I think this would be a great idea and could help promote ASIA. Great idea. I'll find out if I can tape when I get there. If I can, I can get you copies of the demos I attend.

Great idea, Tracy! Put me on the list for those wanting tapes of the proceedings.

I spoke with Rick Last week about this, im bringing my Digital camcorder and am going to record the Voicing classes, and if time permits Frank Fords Fretting class.
Rick did ask for a copy of what ever I recorded, so maybe he has this in mind already?

It is my understanding that you CAN tape things (but I have never been to one yet... so that data may not be accurate)

But I would be a little careful about running off copies for sale (or for free) to pass around.

While it is a nice thing to do within the community, ASIA went to a lot of trouble and expense to host this symposium and it seems like we are undermining the organization by passing out all of the content.

I am not coming down on you Tracy... I know the spirit that you are offering this is positive...

I am just merely reminding everyone that we should be careful about stuff like this.

What *** I *** would do is: Make the tapes and if they are good, email Bill Moll and see if ASIA has an interest in selling them. I can't say if they will or not, but that seems to be a way to do it that helps everyone involved.

Guys,

You might be able to save me a lot of time and trouble here.

I was headed to Wally World today, to pick up 4 or 5 mini cassette decks, tapes, batteries, and several disposable cameras in order to make sure that we'd be able to cover the Symposium as thoroughly as possible, and I was going to look for volunteers to help, once I got there.

If one or more of you want to volunteer, and act as ASIA's "official press corps" I will be most grateful!

Let me know who's interested, and who already has equipment for taping, video, and still photography. I'll postpone my trip to Walmuck until I know exactly what we'll still need.

Thanks!

Bill

Good catch, Brock. Nevertheless, if there is an official record of the educational proceedings I would very much like to purchase. One thing Tracy or others might do is create an "unofficial" taping of the after-hour OLF proceedings...jams, etc. for those of us left behind to check out.

Bill,
I've got a very nice MD recorder with very high fidelity condensor mics that are the tiny clip on type, but too high fidelity to clip to your shirt. They would have to sit on the table in front of the speaker. The only problem is that I will be there Thur, Fri, Sat, and may not make it to all of the sessions. But you can use my equipment until Sat night. I will need lots of 80 min MD tapes if you want to do this, as I was only going to record several of the sessions. Just let me know if you need me to get some extra MD's.

The good thing about MD is the transfer to computer is fairly easy, and not much is lost in the way of quality. Tape however, would seem to lose more of its quality as you transfer to PC. But that is just my opinion.

Brock, I do agree with you, I would probably only share this tape with the local luthiers who could not be there, and Bob J lives here in Denver, and that is why I offered. You are correct, we need to protect ASIA and the information, and make sure no one profits from this except ASIA.

Remember that undermining ASIA is probably the least issue. I would imagine that the ultimate rights to any presentation belong to the presenter. There may be legal issues there and there are certainly issues of respect, especially for those that make a living from instructing.

I do have a member friend that wants to hear the presentations. But the main reason I want to tape is for personal reference. My memory is not going to hold all the info I get this week at the level of detail I want. That is my main concern.

The main purpose for asking about policy is to avoid offending a presenter in any way.

Guys,

As taping has already been OK'd, I assume Rick has made proper arrangements, and that ASIA has permission to use any recorded materials for the association's purposes. I don't believe we'll run into any coyright problems if individuals want to make tapes for their own purposes either. That having been said, we certainly don't want tapes of the classes and workshops to be sold outside of ASIA. I think everyone is on the same page here, and I appreciate the support, and respect you folks have for the situation.

Tracy, I'd love to utilize your MD recorder for as much as we can get on it, but How much are we talkin' about in buckage for "a lot" of mini discs?

Thanks - everyone!

Bill

I say this sorta tongue in cheek

I bet the first guys in line for the tapes will be the ones that complain, "ASIA does nothing for me" and whine that their magazine is late.

Bill,
MD's will hold 80 mins, and each session is somewhere around 2 or 3 hours, so basically 2 to 3 md's per class. But my MD can only be in 2 or 3 classes per day, so that is around 6 MD's per day. Over 2 days, that is 12 MDs. I'm not sure of the cost as I have not bought MD's in the last year. I think you can get a 5 pack for around $20. Just an estimate. But of course I would donate these disks, so no worries there. You can use it as much as you like, as long as I get first dibs on which demos I want! I won't be there until Thursday morning, so see you there. I'll be taking Amy and David's inlay class first thing Thurs morning.

I would be very interested in a copy of the inlay class. I really wish I could be going to Asia but not this year.

Um...if voice recordings and photos get made, won't the good stuff appear in Guitarmaker over the next couple of years? Seems like readymade material to fill the magazine (especially if Rick is resigning), since it's impossible to attend all the demos, and, of course, for members who can't make the Symposium.

That's exactly the plan Carlton.

We'll publish this material, both in GUITARMAKER, and on the new web site. If all comes together really well, it would be very cool to offer the videos as downloadable .MPG or .AVI files on the site too.Bill Moll38516.6397106481

Jim,
What would be a high enough resolution for the magazine? I only have a 2megapixel camera, but it takes great shots.

Thanks to you all for making the effort to make as much of ASIA available to those of us who can not attend. The effort is greatly appreciated!

Bill M.,

It seems as thought maybe the folks who run ASIA should consider putting the word out really early for the next Symposium to get folks to bring digital camcorders to record all of the sessions. If there's only four or five going on at a time, then we wouldn't need that many cameras, and the whole event could be recorded and preserved. ASIA could pay for the media, and then make some good money by then selling the dvd's to folks. I'm sure that those who volunteer their time and camera equipment would love a set of dvd's in exchange for services rendered. Everyone wins. I know I would buy them. I'm bumming that a couple session that I want to attend overlap each other. A dvd solves that problem.
